Very interested as well

what are the risks of doing a delete?
I am new to this topic. I will do a search on this forum as I have found it to be very useful.
My concerns are:

1- Does this shorten the life of the engine? Knowing the the 5.9 never had those restrictions and it performed very good and to top it off, I know the the 6.7 is even more stout than the previous engine.

2- what are the common issues with delete? I hear stories from people cracking up the tune for a lot of HP gain and then blowing head gaskets and other related issues...

Your answers are much appreciated.

From what I have read on this forum, more issues arise from deleting, and running tuners. Making increased HP, without doing heads and transmission up dates are what I've read about on here, that cause issues. In stock form, these engines are very capable of doing the job. I'm stock, tow a 15,000lbs. 5er & no issues. I see 19 mpg solo on the interstate, 14-16 town/highway, and 7-11 mpg towing, depending on weather, wind, terrain. Having a 4x2 does make a difference in the mpg department thou.

I deleted my 2012 with 2000km on er 1250miles. Things i have observed, Better fuel mileage 1100km average to a tank of fuel deleted vs 800km not deleted. The truck runs better, seems to breathe be more responsive. Sounds great imo. You can run it on what ever setting you want stock power to 175hp over. Yea you going to hear of the worst case scenarios on the forum guys who blew there transmissions or head gaskets. They are also the ones who brag how much power there delete and tunes gave there truck. If you delete it , let it warm up to operationg temp before you try to drive it like a race car and treat it like you own it, Youl be fine. I have 36000km 22500miles on since the delete and have not had an issue. I religiously let it warm up, use full synthetic oils and i drive it. It doesnt get babyed all the time i playwith it. It has been deleted through the seasons now from plus 40c to -45c and all types of weather in between and i have had no issues. I work in the oilfields of alberta and there are tons of these trucks running around and about 50 percent are deleted from young guys to hot shot companys to cummins service trucks. The bottom line is they last longer and run better with the emissions gear taken off. This is just my opinion but i see tons of these trucks from all sorts of industry to personal use and what i hear the most when i ask other guys who have deleted. Cause i always ask how many miles you have on that thing? and the majority of what i hear is, havent had a issue since i deleted. Most guys delete so they dont get the problems that seem to plague the trucks in factory form regen issues , engine lights, nox sensors , and ive herd this from cummins service mechanics them selfs. Delete it and drive it like you would any other truck and itll serve you well. H&S have better customer support than chrysler does!!

Just my 0.05

I'm a stock truck guy. Is there any documentation out there that the truck will last longer if deleted or is this just hearsay? Cummins designed our version of the 6.7L to run for 350,000 miles without a rebuild. That's alot of miles.

For those of us in the stock truck club, don't sweat it. I've never owned a deleted diesel truck. My truck runs great stock. I don't know how deleting it can make it run any better?

The decision of whether or not to delete is up to the truck owner and there are many reasons both pro and con whether or not to delete. Making a blanket statement that the truck will last longer gets under my skin. Give the Engineers at Cummins some credit. I think they knew what they were doing when they designed the 6.7L.

Only issues I see are no warranty and most of the major problems or even some minor issues are from the guys that have deleted. Very rarely do you see a guy with a stock truck having codes thrown, weird starting issues, head gasket problems or even tranny issues. Some guys run deleted for 1000's of miles w/o issues. Others don't make it that far. Too me it's not worth the price of a tuner and the rest of the delete stuff for a 1-2 mpg gain. One visit for warranty work that could be denied because the truck is deleted and you just lost any gains you got in mpgs cause you had to pay out of pocket for repairs. If you're out of warranty then go for it. Me I'm waiting till the warranty is up.
Theses trucks aren't cheap to fix.

some benefits :
Less contaminants in oil= longer oil life and less oil contamination from fuel "making oil"
Better fuel economy
More power...but this is a double edged sword...it is all what you make it...some think...ok I can make 120 extra hp and they abuse the truck...Engineers make things with many years of development behind it...and some do not really think things throught when doing mods...cause and effect....If you do a lower hp mod and do not abuse the truck ...then mileage and longevity can be a great side benifit....also remember for any truck...air intake and exhaust are how it breathes....the stock air is good to about 400-500 hp....the exhaust is prob about the same maybe more bc it is a 4 in. Also remember to keep that fuel filter changed so the fuel reaching the motor is clean. Clean = better mileage ...weather it is air filter, fuel filter etc....thanks.

No there not cheap to fix you are right. But by 160000km / 100000miles the damage to the engine is done in my opinion. Oil conatmination is what i was worried about, Even with only 2000km on my truck when i pulled the exhaust, and egr valve they were BLACK and i dont want that soot, particulate, conatmination going back into my engine to be " recyled" and put into my engine oil to be cycled through my bearings, cylinders, oil journals, oil pump ect. Dealers if you have a good one will work with you on deleted trucks, or atleast here they will. Not to mention when your dpf filter does finally let go and you got a 2000$ repair bill that warranty may or may not cover. I know lots of guys have issues here in the cold weather with there trucks idleing and such. I guess it depends on your climate. And how long you want your truck to last, If you delete , and these words came out of a dealers mouth " your head gasket and transmisson if they fail wont be covered. However we will treat it case by case depending on what failed and what caused the failure. " Maybe i just got lucky and the dealers here are pretty good, But im sure if i pulled in with my 35" tires burnt off the back and the rear quarter panel covered in soot and a blown trans they would deny me. But if i pulled in with a stock truck and it looked abused and the trans is shot im sure they wouldnt replace my trans either.

I like a diesel to sound like a diesel. I wanted an exhaust on my truck as well as cleaner oil. I got tired of o2 sensor problems, etc so I deleted. I liked it before and I like it after I deleted everything. I kept all the stock parts so at anytime I can return it to stock.

i just bought a 2011 cummins yesterday. went from a gas ram to a diesel. i am only getting 12mpg with the tires and lift on it. i want to find the best tuner that will allow me longevity and best fuel economy out of the truck. i am not looking to gain horse power unless its what i have to do in order to save some money at the pumps and save my motor in the long run. truck only has 50,000 miles on it so i am not interested in voiding factory warranty but know it will if i get a tuner.

At 4000 miles I did it and replaces the intake horn and couldn't believe how much soot was in it already it was crazy , I don't care if I gained 0mpg it was worth it to me , no more regens putting diesel fuel in your oil and no more stupid EGR . I do have one major regret though and it that I didn't do it as soon as I got it . I have 9000 miles on my truck now and average 18.5 MPG averaged 13 MPG stock.

I don't regret it. I like horsepower, and noise. Now I have a lot of both. I also really enjoy being able to tune it myself if I feel like it. I can do that too now, and it's really cool to be able to do it

I have been deleted for 25,000 miles now. I was concerned by how much my oil was being diluted, and the mileage was not up to my expectations.
Deleting solved both of those problems.
For daily driving I run with the performance tune, which gives me the best fuel mileage.
For towing my travel trailer I turn the tune back to Stock +40 just to make sure I don't hurt anything.
I don't "Stand on it" very often and wait for it to warm up before I do. A sensible foot on the skinny pedal gives the best fuel mileage.
I have had no problems.

Regret not doing it a little sooner if that counts. Deleted at 21,000 I'm at 31,000 now.

I have been deleted since Jan. Not sure if I would do it again if I got a redo. Since deleting I have enjoyed the additional power, but at the cost of worrying about my tranny. If money is not an option then I would say go for it. I have had the truck since zero miles and waited till 65k to delete. Figured I would pay to delete vs clean the EGR.

Cons (for me):
1. Sometimes the truck will not start - seems to be a common problem. All you need to do is turn back to on, and then go to start again.
2. Finding a place to approve the inspection.
3. Tranny might not last long - 5k to upgrade to RevMax 550.
4. Confusing settings. People say not to use the stock setting since timing is more advanced if you use timing 3.
5. Bye bye to my extended warranty.

Pros (for me):
1. More power, truck takes off quicker.
2. I put all of my mileage since day 1 into excel. On the same set of tires I have seen better mpg thus far, but need more data before I can say just how much better it is. Looking at Jan-Mar over the last 3 years it is averaging out to be about 1mpg better thus far over the last 3 months. This is all driving on tow. I am trying to keep the tires on as long as possible to limit variables to mpg data, but I am very close to needing new tires.
3. Love the sound
4. Like the Mini Maxx info.
