coming back from a long road trip i got the dreaded 150 mile counter.i have got this several times before and it always seems to be right after i fill my def tank, which seems common on these trucks. i didnt think much of it because it has always went away on its own. well it didnt this time and now i can only go 5mph? any suggestions on how to get around this with out taking it to a dealer? truck has 70k miles and is a 2017 so i imagine its out of warranty

I had that many times. The last time it cleared itself with like 10 miles to go. I had just about pulled it into the dealer - 60 miles away from where I was camping - and it disappeared. I was pissed. A previous time it did it and I took it to the dealer. They checked the def, pump, and then gave it a clean bill of health and cleared the code. It's a crap shoot.

You have just the see dealer message or is the check engine light on too?

A dealer level scan tool, or possibly the alfa-obd setup, will be required to reset it once in limp mode.

If it is a hard failure then nothing, including the dealers level scan tool, can reset the code/limp mode until the problem is corrected. After it’s ‘cleared’, it will continue to come back and the limp mode will continue to count down. Been there done that. And I have the AlfaOBD and a Launch scan tool. And I took it to the dealer and they can’t clear it until the problem is fixed. That’s how FCA and the EPA have you by the cajones.....

This limp mode thing is the one thing that really bothers me on these new trucks. I see it as a safety issue. Trapped in a bad or remote area, no cell coverage, bad weather. Just because a smog device is not working is no reason to strand someone like this. Why not just lock the steering wheel or flat all four tires,,, LOL kidding. Perhaps a device that would notify all government agencies of the failure so as soon as you were home it would be impounded till it was fixed. Again, kidding. But you got to wonder what the next step is by the EPA. Who voted for this limp mode thing or the people that gave the EPA, whoever they are, this kind of power.

That exact thought has always been one of the things that scared me about the def system, you can’t even limp it home to fix it. I often travel to somewhat remote places far from a dealer and that would be a stupid reason to be stranded in the middle of no where!

I always found it interesting that government vehicles equipped with def systems have different software that keeps the vehicle in service instead of derating and leaving them stranded in the event of a def system issue.. goes to show you how much confidence big brother has in their technology.

We have a 5500 with a 6.7 cummins set up as an ambulance that does not derate so I would imagine the tuning is available for our trucks, I wonder if anyone has gotten their hands on it? Most likely heavily guarded by the dealer. Also have a 6.7 Ford that doesn’t derate set up as an ARV, but that’s a whole different animal.

Well, the P203F is reductant too low, P207F is reductant quality performance

First one is easy, second one would need some diagnosing. Could be a bed NOx sensor, or could just be bad DEF.

What DEF did you fill it with?

And, yes, of course, clearing the codes wouldn't do you any good with the dealer message.

I drained my DEF tank yesterday.

I live in the high, high heat, heat of South Florida and I'm just not using the DEF fast enough.

Been wanting to do it for a while.

Tried using an Auto Zone, bulb-type siphon. That sucked. But not in the way I wanted it to.

BTW, DEF tastes like...... blecchhh

So I went to West Marine which just happens to be less than a 1/2 mile away. The guy there helped out and talked me into getting this --

It worked. And it worked well.

But, West Marine is -- A boating store so they add about 70% to the cost of everything. 4cereal

So if you want one (if you don't have one, you should want one) Amazon has them for a bunch less.

Pretty sure I got most of the DEF out of the tank. It was just under 1/2 full and I got out about 2 gallons. When I refilled it with 2-1/2 gallons of Peak, the gauge read just over 1/2 tank.

I just made a 3,300 mile road trip towing about 4,000#. When I disconnected the trailer and made a spirited start, a “Perform Service” popped up on my display. During the trip, my DEF got low enough to send a warning that it was low. No problem, filled-it up at the next truck stop and kept moving. Never gave me any other message?

Went by the parts store today to get a new air filter, had my codes checked and there was a P203F code. There’s nothing stored in messages, nor any other warning?

Should I schedule a service at the dealership? The truck has 36,954 miles?

Thanks in advance!

Having the same issue. countdown to limp mode. see dealer. Question, can I buy a scan tool to solve this myself. I don't like dealers. Every-time I'm gone to a dealer. just a few times. I did the fix's myself and have saved thousands, so I'm not impartial to buying a pricey scan tool. I fond this one at amazon Autel Scanner Maxisys MS906, not sure if I can get the info I'm looking for or reset the limp mode BS. The limp mode came on right after I filled my DEF. it was the first time I filled and I did over fill it by accident.

I see these horror stories and just wonder if it's worth it. But I got the thing and it's all paid for so I figure it's just the price of having a diesel and I am ready to bend over when the time comes.

So I disconnected both batteries, and touched the negative to the positive for 30 seconds, then I reconnected both batteries, and turned the key to the on position without starting the truck, then I pressed the brake twice, and pressed the gas pedal completely, and slowly twice within 10 seconds. I turned the key off, then started the truck and all messages disappeared. My rear parking sensor warning came right back and the See dealer for service has NOT came back and with about 30 miles of driving so far. I will clean the DEF jet today though. I will never fill the def up to 100% again. Thanks for the help folks!

Oh by the way 250 miles and the see dealer for service has not came back. So to expand on that disconnecting both batteries shorting the negative to the positive for 30 seconds. Then turning the key to the on position without starting depressing the brake twice and slowly pressing the gas pedal twice within 10 seconds turn the key off then start the vehicle and it worked. Nothing like a bunch of research and a free resolve.

Nice thread.👍

And you guys wonder why my $70,000 Longhorn sits covered in the back yard with weeds growing around it.🤣
But honestly, its the whole EPA/diesel thing that pretty much made it an 8000 pound lawn ornament.
The unreliability is simply unacceptable.

Yeah, limp mode 1000 miles from home with the camper & family. No thanks.
Hey, BTW... Is that new Ford 7.3L gasser any better than the cam-munching Hemi? ;)

So sad. Glad I got mine used at 27500. still a pretty expensive paperweight none the less. I'm planning on getting a scan tool so I can just do all my own maintenance. I'm not paying dealer prices. I have a Nissan NV 2500 and the dealer wanted to charge me $3,500 to replace a catalytic converters and I end up ordering some online for $750 and replacing them in an hour and 15 minutes. I just don't trust dealers. Sneaky snakes. Lol

This is my first diesel. I have mixed feeling about the delete. More power sounds like it will kill the transmission from what I've read and heard. I don't need more power. 800 foot pounds and 600 horsepower is enough for me, so I'm apprehensive about the delete kit because of that. But I sure wouldn't mind better gas mileage. it seems like the only benefits to the delete system is not having to deal with all of the EPA crap, which seems like a great thing for the pocket book.

Any thoughts?, maybe this is better in another thread.
