Why did you buy a RAM?

Another in my series of newbie posts, pondering the fundamentals of RAM ownership.

In previous posts I’ve demonstrated my incompetence with towing, oil changes, and diesel engines. But thanks to you all, I’m learning.

Today, approaching one year of ownership, I am a very happy owner.

Why did I buy a RAM over Ford or GM?

1. I like the way they look. I always liked the grill especially.

2. One word: Mega-cab.

3. Most importantly, when I spend time on local freeways, whenever I see professional drivers towing commercial loads using a 3/4 or full ton truck, they are almost always driving a RAM. I don’t know if that is common across the country but I almost never see a GM or Ford pulling commercially. That said something to me about durability and performance and so far I’ve been really pleased.

How about you? Why did you pick RAM?

I have a small selection of Ferd F-150s to drive for work as our commuter vehicles; always seem cheap and change things every year; all the diesel engines after the 7.3 - need I say more?

GM products don't appeal to me (although they might once the 2019 RAMs come out with that Chev/Nissan look).

CUMMINS, love the Cummins engine. Love the interior look and comforts, love the exterior look. And initially I wanted a standard transmission, but settled on the Aisin (ZERO REGRETS!).

When my 2001 F350 had me down to 20 mph going up a hill towing my 20,000 pound 5th Wheel I said time for a change. So I bought a 3500. That same hill with my 20,000 pound 5th Wheel in tow doing 60 mph just where the cruise control is set the Ram doesn't slow down. This is also my 1st Ram 3500 and after 31,000 miles on it now we love it. This Ram isn't my DD it's my tow truck for my 5th Wheel RV and my joy riding truck. Thinking about 2020 seeing the 5th gen and trade if the improvements are there. I like the body style of the Ram 3500 DRW and still think they look the best out of the big 3. I like the AISIN in my Ram and think it's a beast of a truck for towing in comfort. I like the engine brake, Tow Haul Mode, all the interior storage, back up camera, 8.4 NAV, rubber flooring, black leather seats I added, 6.7 Cummins, easy of maintenance I do myself. I like the fact it feels like a truck and not a truck that is trying to feel like a car. It's a real truck not a want a be truck. Now to get a matching Challenger is my quest!!!

Ford warranty support (lack of there of)....that's what got me into the dealership

After 3+ years, other perks that I've learned exceed my 2014 F-350

Interior design and quality of materials
Suspension
Engine Fuel Economy

If I could do it over again
I would get a 3500
Megacab
Aisin
Potentially Ramboxes

Cummins. I considered a Ford until I looked under the hood. Anytime I think about switching to a Ford, I remember what it looks like under the hood. That plus the many reports of warranty denials does it for me. I want simplicity and I want to know there won't be a fight for warranty coverage.

Why did I dump 70 grand on a new RAM and not another brand?

1.) The new Super Duty didn’t impress me at all.

2.) RAM is the smallest one ton truck on the planet (and I needed a little truck for my particular camper).

3.) My wife would divorce me if I came home with a GM (Obama Motors) product.

Cause I love MOPAR! and Love Cummins. wanted the Aisin but settled on the 68 since I had buyer's antsy pants and didn't want to wait. still like it tho. it does what I need it to do. sadly, life changes plans and I have had to put buying a 5er off since I bought the Ram back in '14. every year we try to buy a 5er, something comes up and it's a No-Go. sooo, my Ram is my commuter. Love driving it since it drives like a truck, not a car. Sure, it doesn't shift like my ole 79 LRET, but it still rides like a truck. Big, wide, LONG, got that diesel rattle. plenty of room that I don't need a Megacab. nice long bed that I don't have to leave the tailgate down. Looks way better than Chevys. Ford don't look bad and was actually in the market for one recently because local dealers service suck sooo bad, but wife (major Ford Fan... drives a Ford Edge Sport - actually a fun lil ride) convinced me to stick with it since the truck pretty much works great with no issues - just tons of recalls.

soooo, now, I'm all excited to get back on the 5er research, and HOPE we can pick one up next spring. It's nice knowing my truck will pull whatever rig the wife wants without worrying if we have "enough" truck. WOOT!

the little work I have put it through, it has come through with flying colors.... 4600 lbs of gravel rock in the bed... bed drops maybe 2 inches. Noice.

Cummins, No one else has a mega cab, and price. I like the ford and Chevy but the Chevy doesn't have enough cabin room for the family and the ford was just too pricey

I buy them to get the Cummins, and the Aisin is just a blessing.
all below are club cabs.

98.5 2wd 2500 5 speed manual

2002 2wd 3500 dually Auto. Hated that trans. Loudest Cummins I ever owned. you could not order from drive through window without turning off engine.

2006 2wd 3500 SRW G56. Special ordered this truck. Loved it. this was the first year for G56 and it had the wrong OD. with 3:73 gears the truck did like 2100 rpm at 70 mph (they changed OD in 2007).

2015 4wd 3500 dually Aisin 4:10. Bought off lot, tradesman with upgrades for cloth/chrome,etc. Man they came a long way between 2006 and 2015 interior confort :).

2018 2wd 3500 Dually Aisin 3:73 Laramie. Special Ordered for more comforts. still waiting for it. this may be my last truck, so I bought some comfort and options that I wanted. Always wanted a truck with bucket seats and full console.

Sounds like we had the same truck

They might have changed the OD, but my 2016 still runs at 2200rpm at 72/73 mph

I'm on my 4th Ram in-a-row. Once I moved up to the Diesel for towing, I'll never go back.
I think the Ram 3500 Dually's are the Nicest Looking 1-Ton's out there. Smooth, clean lines.
Great interiors, creature comforts and overall design. I'm not a normal brand-loyal type of guy,
but for Trucks, its Only RAMs. Cant' wait for camping season to start back up again. Looking
forward to the Smooth, easy towing.

Having spent time behind the wheel of multiple Cummins powered rams, Duramax powered GM's and a couple of Fords. I decided that the Cummins engine fit the bill the best.

1. Proven inline engine design that you can actually work on if you have to
2. MANUAL TRANS (I'm a horrible automatic trans driver)
3. Solid front axle
4. Better looking truck IMHO

I came from owning a 2006 6.0 F-350 dually. I ordered it in the fall of 2005. The truck seemed to be plagued with issues. It spent more time in the dealer's repair shop for this, that and the other. Looking back, I'm glad I had the extended warranty. About $7,000.00 in warranty repairs. Between the dealer, and FOMOCO I do not plan to ever purchase another Ford diesel product. The dealer that sold me the 2006 also sold Ram trucks. The owner's son would not take my truck in on trade for a new Ram truck. His reasoning was this: "It has the 6.0 engine, not one will buy it" I told him I'll never purchase another vehicle from you, and have not been back.

I think that many current Ram owners are here from the horrible owner experience with FOMOCO, and the 6.0 problematic truck many owners wanted and needed a reliable engine.

Things may have changed at Ford, but I'm not willing to find out. My 2012 has been great. Only 1 check engine light to date, 3 recalls, 2 fixed, and waiting for the steering/brake interlock thing to get taken care of. If the next 5 years go by as well as the last 5 have, I'm in for a great ride.

We do tow a 5th wheel RV. This truck just plain rocks. As stated earlier, towing up a 6% grade, hold 60 mph and still have lots of go pedal left. The E/B is the cats meow.

For the love of Mopar! Been restifying & racing for 25+ years and after 360 powered rams in the mid-90's I bought my 1st Cummins that being in a '96 Ram CCLB 4x4, could not believe the mpg and control with these trucks towing, love'em! Can't wait for a few weeks till I can hook my new '18 up to this........

1) Never had enough tools or patience to own a Ford, so those were out.
2) Used to have Chevys, but not after they went to IFS (Inferior Front Suspension), so no more GM.
3) Rams also by far look the best, I think, which is why I'm hoarding Gen 4 models. Not crazy about the design of the upcoming Gen 5.

I buy RAM because it’s wraped around a Cummins with a solid axle under it. Anything else is irrelevant, but it helps that I like it’s curb appeal.

f150 burnt to a crisp in my driveway in 4.5 minutes flat. Bought a Silverado 1500. Beat the hell out of it doing residential construction work for 3 years and 80k miles. Needed the ability to tow more, more comfortably. I wanted the power and drivability of the diesel of course. I promised myself Id never buy another gas truck.

Most every commercial hauler you see is in a Cummins. Most job sites are littered with them. That speak volumes. I'm still kind of partial to the exterior styling of the Chevy, but there's no escaping the fact that the Cummins is a flat out work horse. Aaaand, they're still a better value than the competition.
