transmission noise and mirror question

so i now have a 37' toyhauler and the stock mirrors just cant see down the sides the way i would like but i really like the viewing angles of the stock mirrors. is there anywhere to get just extended mirror arms (take mirror housing off arm, replace arm, put mirror housing back on)? or is there a company that makes stock style extended/extendable mirrors? any links would be great if you know of anything.

second, i have a 6 speed manual trans and in any gear or neutral it has a grinding/metallic sound. push in the clutch at a stop and it goes away or just push the shifter boot down to cover the tear it has and it goes away. since i now tow a second home around i was wondering if this noise is normal or a sign of soon to come failure.

any help/advice on either subject is much appreciated.

There are a few different options out there, Cipa makes an aftermartket mirror that is more like the GM style. It is mounted on two beams that extend out rather than flip. Dodge actually has a accessory mirror that the Cipas are based off of, the exception is that the dodge ones have lights on the ends. The mirror panels are larger and I believe that they extend further out, which would help you. There are a few guys on here that have them, I myself have been toying around the idea as I broke the mount plate on my left-hand trying to fold it in for the truck wash. im trying to decide how much longer I want to keep the truck so every dollar in gets cost/benifit analysis. Then there is the 2011 mirrors which some have mounted with success, but they wouldn't be a factory fit.

still wondering about the transmission noise guys. sounds like a bucket of nuts and bolts being dumped down an iron pipe all the time except when stopped and the clutch is in.

really dont feel like splitting the trans from the engine. will that cause problems down the road if its not fixed?

It certainly will. It will chew up the pressure plate and likely leave you on the side or the road. How long it is until that happens is a shot in the dark. Could be 50K miles or it could be tomorrow. The fact it is already "grinding" and not just a growl from a bad bearing tells me the bearing has or is starting to come apart. Might not be an issue with this trans, but I have seen loose parts (pressure plate fingers, pressure plate dowl pins) put holes in transmission cases. They will fling off or get picked up by the pressure plate and pass through aluminum like butter. If that happens you might as well get a new tranny while you are at it.

In any case, its not that hard to pull this trans out. And if you have to pay a shop to do it, it is only a few hours so labor shouldn't be that high. Keep in mind, if you dont need a clutch, the longer you wait you WILL need a pressure plate.

so basically shifter, bellhousing bolts, driveshafts and mount, slide it back and go from there? if its an all day project i might have to put it in the shop but if its only a couple hours i might take it on

Easily a few hours if you have the proper stuff. A lift and tranny jack makes it go so much faster. The guy that did my clutch had tranny off in 20 min. But that was with proper tools, etc.

And ATP rocks :)

yeah it should be a fairly easy fix man trans are easy enough to pull i would do it pronto to avoid said problems mentioned above considering a throw out bearing is fairly inexpensive especially compared to an entire trans

4wheel drive or 2 wheel? And is that the nv5600 or g56? The g56 is pretty light (but still heavy) and if its 2wd its an easy task. The nv5600 is a beast and you will need some kind of tranny jack. 4wd your gonna have to fight the t case. Either way, its not a huge task. It is ruff to do in the driveway though. Id expect to pay for about 5 or 6 hours if its 4wd and maybe 4 if its 2wd. Obviously labor rates vary from location and dealer or independent.

tag on the trans says g56-6. 4x4. it sounds more like gear noise in the trans. only goes away when stopped and clutch pedal down. changes pitch with each gear. is this trans inherently noisy? shifter boot has a sizable hole and when its closed u cant really hear it at all.
