TONS of SOOT

When I'm cruising around 50 mph (I believe OD) if i try to accelerate and slowly get into the pedal I will put out a cloud of black that will stop traffic. Its been doing this for awhile and the only way around it is to just mash the pedal so that it down shifts and then only a little smoke comes out. What gives? Turbo and boots and filters are all good and clean. Any ideas.

Only thing I heard about the 5.9, (maybe all 'small' cummins) is that the computer recognizes when the throttle is advanced and 'thinks' that full power is needed, and it opens the injectors to full open, (max fuel), and that causes the puff(?) of black smoke.

Mine does same thing bc right around 50 is when torque converter locks up so when you lay on the gas your putting in more fuel than truck can burn... Since I'm mobile I can't see your sig to know if you have programmer. But that would make it worse

Check your air filter. If its plugged up/dirty it will cause you motor to run leaner than it already does.

Mine was doing the same thing, pulled the air filter and it was black. Replaced it and nowhere near as much soot.

Cruising around 50 you are already around maybe 2psi of boost if that maybe even no boost and with the Torq converter locked you are lugging the motor when easing on the throttle and it's not building Any boost with all the fuel and that's why ur blacking out the sun

So it's ALL normal and no worries?

Pretty much yeah...soot out of the 5.9 is completely normal. If you do alot of low RPM and low boost driving then big clouds when you actually lay on it are normal.

If you are noticing big clouds of soot all the time, check your air filter.

Yes it's normal bud if ur truck was stick no tune Then u shouldnt see much if any but if ur tuned then ya

just sounds like some added fuel before boost

Did it happen to start about the time you decided to stack your power-adders???:confused013::doh:

I'd venture to say that's where it's coming from. If you went back to stock it would likely stop. I'm guessing this was happening even with the old turbo too?
