Tachometer and Speedometer not working

I have been searching for another 1st gen and I have come across many in which the speedometer and the tachometer are not working. I am sure for some it doesn't matter but for myself I want to see legit miles. If I come across one that has been documented properly and kept record of miles another way I may consider. So my question is, is there a company out there that can repair the OEM ones in our trucks? Also good to know incase the one in my 92 ever goes on me. Thanks in advance!

Why would you not buy a 1st Gen that the speedometer didn't work? Don't you know these are million mile engines?

12 years ago I bought my 92 and the speedometer didn't work, he said it had around 360,000 miles on it. I know now it has around 420,000 miles on it and the only thing I have done is rebuild the IP, replaced the injectors and LP. It doesn't use hardly any oil and still runs strong.

Finding a 1st Gen that the speedometer works is like hitting the lottery. The gears in the cluster break, the wiring is terrible on the Dodges and the ratio adapter break. They can be repaired by most anyone and the gears are still available the last I knew.

haha yes I know they are million mile engines, I just like to know where they are at. Its the purest in me I guess. Good to know they are still repairable so if I find the right one I can get it back working!

My tach died on its own. An isspro ran fine off the signal feed. I have several trucks and no odo's have made 400k. They break first! Speedos all work though. Never cared about the miles so long as I get to hear/see it run - and isn't scary.

Maybe your widget at the trans/tcase has failed or become disconnected.

If you insist on a OEM spedo, Ebay for a used/good one is your best option that i'm aware of.

You have a OEM tach on your truck? There's not a lot to them. Trace your leads. make sure nothing looks funny. you might take your meter and see if you still read continuity to your transducer pick up.

classicdash.com makes a drop in dash for our trucks loaded with autometer gauges in the neighborhood of $800. If I would of known about that, I would of went for it. I run 'speedway motors' gauges, and a isspro tach. Which aren't as expensive as autometer units. I don't think my spedo reads accurately, but that has more to do with the differences in tire size and differential gear ratios. But the odometer works well which is about all I care about in that regard. GPS signal is marginal in my part of the country, as much as I entertained to get a smartphone GPS speed reading while bombing down the highway in a clapped out diesel truck.. Seems more trouble than its worth. Suppose I'll wait for the day I get a savvy passenger to help with that.
