Strange Noise Behind Glovebox

Our truck makes a strange noise sometimes after the truck is turned off. It often takes a minute or more to occur, and sometimes it doesn't happen at all.

The sound is like a rusty hinge on a door, but it comes in a burst of 4 or 5 "creaks" within a second or two.

It occurs both with the climate control on or off, so I don't think it could be the heater / air conditioner.

Anybody have the same issue? Any idea what it is?

Mine does that too.

I assumed it was vent control or something like that. Don't know what you'd call the 'thing' but I'm thinking there is something behind the dash that directs the air to the various vents. I assumed it was just going to a 'home' position or something like that. It does creak a bit, just hope that the creaking doesn't mean it's about to fail or jam.

Yes, I'm sure what I've typed sounds cryptic but that's what happens when you don't know the proper names for things.

Brian.

That is correct. It is the blend doors. My 02 jeep grand cherokee made the EXACT same sound, as does my 13 SRT8 Jeep. Amazing that they have not changed things in a lonnng time for hvac airflow control.

My truck has done this from day one and I am a little disappointed with it and how it can be excepted through the ram community as this is a mesh door and a normal sound problem, I call bs on that , for almost $70k it should be silent with no moans or creeks . I took my done to the dealer and they said it was a normal thing, wth:doh:. just my 2cents.:confused013:

Its something i just got used to telling people when they get in my nice truck, the normal question is what was that or is something broken? I usually say that its normal thats what the dealer told me to tell you:hehe::confused013:

But the noise is there all the time even today when i replaced the rear diff cover and the truck had been sitting for a couple houres that darn thing is still making noises .:S:

That's not a random YouTube video it's from my post on here over a year ago when I first bought the truck. I didn't want to sit there recording waiting for the sound because it randomly starts. It had done the sound 2 or 3 times before I hit record. After the dealer tore the dash apart replaced 3 different hvac motors/controllers I noticed bolts and screws missing and a slight rattle once in awhile behind the gauges. So don't bother trying to fix it. It is normal for Chrysler.

I kept thinking my truck was the only one with the sound because the dealer had no clue what i was talking about utill they finally heard it. Wish they would of owned up to the noises and said its normal. I can't be the first one who ever brought up this issue.

Also after they replaced the doors, on the recirculating door mounted to the firewall that lets fresh air come in, during installation the gasket between the door and firewall got smashed in half creating a loud whistling noise while driving.

As I posted earlier I discovered two of my RAM trucks had this problem on delivery.

My tech told me he took extra care in resealing and re-installing the assembly on both trucks solving the whistling noise.

I wonder how many service departments miss this problem.

Also I sat in the truck with a tech and service manager waiting for the sound to go off. Of course it didn't for 30 minutes. Pretty cool they hung out with me for that long until it went off. It finally did and this is the response I got from the tech. He said its because of the key fobs, the HVAC system is designed to go back to floor and defrost settings for some safety standards. So when the truck is off it tries searching for the fob every so many minutes as a safety feature. So if your truck is locked and you approach it, listen, you will hear these sounds from the outside of the truck. It's making sure the system is in defrost and floor modes. So I know sometimes when I start the truck and the climate control is on, the windshield will fog up for a second because of the quick burst of air from the safety settings. I said ok that makes sense but why the noise. They would not admit it was a normal sound or not. Basically I got "that's just how it is"

I have worked on my truck installing stuff with no key fob no were near the truck and it goes off. and the mechanic knows it is a standard problem he just paid not to say anything.
Its just not a good part but ill never let some knuckle head take apart my dash .

Blend door problems on Jeeps and RAMs have been around for eever. My 2014 is making the same noise. I replaced the blend doors on my daughters 2001 Grand Cherokee - there is a guy on ebay that sells kits for the older rigs that can be installedwithout removing the dash. Worked great on the 2001 Jeep.

The sound you hear is all the blend doors wearing out the hinges. It's Rams' long range plan for their service department cash flow. Don't worry, the hinges will last till the warranty runs out. The firewall on the truck has to be removed to replace them.
