yea, my rag has trouble going into 2nd or rev from neutral while idleing.....why is that? tranny getting worn or could it be my clutch? makes it a pain at long stoplights.....

I'm new to this but mine is hard to shift into 3rd. I recently did a fluid change on a 2000 24v and added the extra ltr and right away I noticed shifting into 3rd was way smoother. I use a pump from a giant ketchup bottle that happened to fit onto a 1ltr lubro molly oil container and filled it through the top bolt hole. It pumps really fast. I use it to fill tranny's and diffs all the time.

99.9% of the time I granny shift and have no problem. The other day someone pulled out in front of me and I wanted to give them a rearview mirror of 1 ton Dually. So off the clutch I came in second and wound it tight and forgot I wasn't in a car and grab third...FAST....it fell right in and barked the tires, I about crapped!!!!

I am also finding it hard-er shift into third. Checked my tranny fluid level, it's fine. Checked clutch res, full. It's not a big worry, just want to do ANYTHING I can to prevent possible damage...

I have heard of getting a 90 degree pipe fitting, (theoretically it is a standard thread) and threading it into the fill hole, fill through that and use original plug to cap off the 90. Good to go! ( I haven't tried it, but I plan to when I change tranny fluid in Jan)

Just fill it through the PTO cover top bolt, no extra equipment need.

Mine used to be quite notchy in 3rd gear as well. After draining the gear oil out :banghead: and putting synthetic 5w30 in it, it shifts much nicer now. Still a tiny bit notchy but as long as I'm smooth, it goes through the gears pretty well for a big truck tranny. :)

Funny.............

I have this customer with the Getrag and I had never driven one prior, so I hoped in and took off....in FIRST GEAR.

That was a mistake. When you push the throtle down a bit, the back of your head hits the rear window glass. Then, just as you come to realize your mistake, you simultaneously let up on the throttle AND push the clutch pedal down. Now, the forward momentum ceases and your forehead strikes the windshield.

I to have no issues going from 2nd to 3rd unless going up hill, when you get in that well i could leave it in 2nd but you know the tranny wants 3rd, other than that while in traffic or taking off from a light, i figure whoever is behind me can either wait or go around me LOL
Then of course there are those ones that like to ride ur butt when ur making a turn at a intersection and you have time to get across no problem but when shifting to third the truck slows down, im sure some of those people at one point or another had the "Oh Crap" affect going on... I have heard alot of bad things bout the getrag but so far with mine guessing pushing 300k since the mileage thing doesn't work and hasn't for the last 10yrs on mine it seems to be strong still, i don't push it and don't jerk it around either, changed the fluid in it summer of 2010 and did the 1/2qt overfill and its been as happy as can be, hopefully this coming spring and such i can pressure wash it and fix the regular seepage issues that comes with a tranny with so many miles. I inspected the oil when i changed it and wasn't any metal that i could see or find..

I have a little different problem with my Getrag, not sure if it's because of the hills in TN, but 3rd to 4th is my problem. I never use 1st, always catch 2nd, hit 15mph catch 3rd, now here is where my problem starts, if I don't whine 3rd to 35mph and shift quick I get a rattle in my drive line. Once I get up to 40mph 4th gear runs out great, but between 30-40mph I get rattling. Like I said before, there are a lot of hill in east TN, I don't get much of a rattle when the road is flat.

At what speed does 5th gear seem to be whinding out on yours? It seems that mine runs great as long as I keep it below 65mph, average 20+mpg if I keep it between 55-60mph.

Mine would pop out of 4th if i ramped it pretty good....then after a bit ramped it in 3rd and now......busted shift fork....3rd and 4th are no longer.....at least till my new shift fork comes in
