Quick DEF gauge question

I just picked up an immaculate used 16 Laramie Longhorn from a dealer after coming from a 5.9. A few miles from the dealer, I noticed the DEF gauge is about 1/3 full. They said it would be filled, but evidently that got overlooked. How much longer should I expect to go before I need to fill it? I have no clue with this DEF stuff, so go easy on me. I read horror stories of going 5mph and want no part of that. Here is what it is currently showing.

You have plenty of time, i run mine down till i get the warning and that gives me a few hundred miles before it goes into limp mode.

If you run it all the way down to the warning message, basically clear empty, you can go 200 miles before it puts you into the 5 mph limit.

At the point where your gauge is, you could probably add 4 gallons, it holds 5.5 gallons.

DEF is used at a rate of approximately 2-3% of fuel used, the lower your fuel economy, the more DEF it uses, so towing/hauling uses lots more than just bobtailing around empty.

Yeah no rush unless you are starting off on a trip. If you are new to DEF I recommend you do some research and learn how to read the manufacture date codes on the various DEF products. Then only put fresh fluid in your truck. Enjoy the new truck.

You have plenty of miles to go on that. Unless you are going on a long towing trip I would run it down more before I add any more. When not towing I run mine down until the warning comes on then add a 2.5 gallon jug (I don't fill it up). Not towing it doesn't use much and I don't want it sitting in the tank for too long, like to keep the DEF as fresh as possible.

As I have stated before on here, I have only used two jugs of DEF ever in my truck, every other drop has come from the truck stop bulk pumps. If you have a good truck stop near you or along your way somewhere, it is so much easier and cheaper to get it there.

The only caveat would be that at Loves truck stops you need a special magnetic release collar to use their DEF pumps. Sometimes they have them to loan if you go there.

I run mine down to under 1/4 tank on gauge. Then there is room to dump a 2.5 gallon jug in with out worrying about over filling and spilling on paint. Good for 3200 miles/jug.

Just FYI, anywhere close to the halfway point on the gauge and you'll have plenty of room for a 2.5 gallon jug. There is nearly two gallons of room above the full point on the gauge.

And, getting DEF on the paint is no issue at all, rinses completely off with just a little water.

You have a lot of miles left on the tank.

Yesterday, I had the message 100 miles or so until speed limited to 5 mph. Don't try to put two jugs of DEF in at that point. I tried but the last of the 2nd tank overflowed just before it was empty.

And, that's another advantage of filling at the truck stop bulk pump, you can fill up without worry that you can't get the whole jug in.
