New Injectors, Bad MPG

Wondering if I have another issue somewhere or if this is just the "break in" for new injectors that I'm reading about.

Put a set of BRAND NEW Bosch injectors in my truck a few hundred miles ago and my mileage has took a nose dive! With the bad injectors I was getting around 14-15 city and now I'm getting around 10! All these are hand calculated.

Balance rates on the injectors looks great, double checked the proper torque on everything including new connector tubes with the injectors. No fuel leaks that I can see, no abnormal smoke, no bad amount of blow by, no loosing or making oil, no loss in power. Truck starts, idles, and runs great! Much better than before the swap.

Just having a hard time understanding my MPG dropping so low.

Could I have a bad CP3, lift pump, or FCA?

Also, installed new fuel filter at the same time as injectors and the air filter is clean. No boost leaks, Rail Pressure is fine stays around 7-7.5k at idle and peaks around 28k WOT. Can build the boost close to 40psi no problem.

Only code is P0483 Cooling Fan Speed which never sets the light it's just always stored for some reason and has been that way since I purchased the truck.

Any advice? Or am I just being paranoid? Haha!

Well, the obvious source is the injectors if that is ALL you changed. NEW has different meanings to vendors as we have seen. Larger tips also have a tendency to cause issues even on new bodies.

I can tell you there is no break in period needed.

They are stock tips. And I thought that as well but they are all new and balanced. All tests show they're fine and I have absolutely no signs of a bad one. No fuel in oil, no excessive blow by, no hard starts or miss, and no smoke.

Are they new new or just the vendors idea of new?

Where did you get them and what was part number?

Possibly the tune? Have you gone back to stock and seen if it makes a difference?

The final answer is Bosch doesn't charge a core on new, only reman.
Wrong. Bosch gioves you a credit for returning the cores because they rebuild them. New retail is around $550, return the cores and the cost is around $400. Yes Bosch gets a core charge if you want to pay the lower cost.

When I first bought the truck it was getting around 17 mixed and slowly fell to 14-15 when I realized the injectors were going out. I'm not asking for a miracle I'd just like to get back to 17! Kinda strange the mileage dropped around the same time I got rid of the Diablo Predator that came with the truck for a Smarty. Ditched the Smarty for EFI Live, mileage went back up a little after that. Not sure if I should try a dealer flash then reload my EFI Live or not...

I am still dealing with this same issue. but i changed injectors, did the smarty update on the jr, and a few other things happened in that time, but have been fixed or have found in great working order. Only thing I can think of is I had old software in the jr 5.09 which I liked a lot and updated to 5.14  and ever sense I get crappy mpg. I even changed my tires back down to a 315 instead of a 35" .45" difference in height, mpg went up 1 mpg.
now with my truck I get better mpg doing 70+ then anywhere else :confused013: and my egts are 650 to 800. if I do 60-68 my egts run 750-1k on the same road I take every day. I have a 05 but I will be getting udc and start playing with it and see what I can do.

If i lost 2 mpg I could live with that. was getting 19.3- 19.9 down to 10-12 in mixed driving ( my normal drive to work ) best so far I got is 15 on hwy, I used to get that towing a 15k trailer.

I cant get EFI live for my 05 so udc it is. my load numbers to TP make no sense at all high load 50%+ with TP being under 17% with load numbers like that it will just dump fuel, and my egts agrees with that by there readings.

I don't think its smarty, but there stock file from dodge they use, as dodge had a newer flash for these trucks. and what I have read the 5.09 file was the older software. so when I did the up date to 5.14b I got the new flash with it.

So yours hasn't slowly started creeping back up like I've read in some other threads?

I have got to get this figured out...12 MPG unloaded is ridiculous no matter what!

I'm really leaning toward something left behind by Smarty with my tire size recalibration because everything mechanical that I can check is all fine!

This is in response to Allan/Cerb regarding those cores.

We handle Bosch New stock Injectors. And they come right from Bosch in Europe. Bosch does NOT demand cores or a core charge for NEW Injectors. Bosch gives no credit on returned cores on a sale of Genuine New Injectors. A core charge may be demanded by certain vendors. I guarantee you we do not demand a core charge nor do we have a need for your old injectors. If anyone is selling new Bosch Injectors and demanding a core charge or your old injectors, it is THAT vendor setting that policy.

Thank you!

If vendors are selling remains as new that is false advertising and against the law. If someone had engine damage from injectors that were misrepresented I'm sure they would have good grounds for a law suit.
How can I tell if my supposed new injectors were actually remains? The part number?

Are they the correct nozzles for your 2006?

2003/2004 have 8 holes

2004.5-2007 have 5 holes

Based on the part number my injectors are Bosch Remains. They were sold to me as new. I will be taking this up with the vendor on the next business day. But I can say that they looked new and worked fine. I have a thousand miles on them so far and no problems. If they were remained right they should perform as new.

Mine are 0445 and for 04.5-07 so I'm sure they're the correct nozzles. Would sending a data log to my tuner possibly help diagnosis of an issue? Like I said the truck is running fine though as far as I can see and tell.

Brand new Bosch CR injectors are hard to find with the 04.5 - 07 being even more of a challenge.

I have had people contact me about their injectors they have purchased which had the 0445 number in the beginning of the string but who found out the injector was actually tampered with. The injector was originally a new 03/04 injector and the customer had an 04.5 - 07. Come to find out that the injector vendor just swapped out nozzles from the 03 pattern to the 04.5 pattern to be able to make a sale. In one case, the vendor had scribbled out the last 3 digits of the number on the box so the number matched injectors made for the 04.5 +. Another customer told me that the box had a label stuck on over the original number on the box.

One wants to avoid injectors that have been tampered with.
Injector disassembly & reassembly outside of optimum clean room conditions often create their own problems. High pressure Leakage between nozzle and injector body by using incorrect torque values. Mis-alignment & contamination are common issues. High pressure Leakage potential due to damage to the high pressure sealing surfaces. All these failures can lead to a broken nozzle retaining nut.

I have an 04.5, also have had the problem of new injectors, and mileage dropping off to 10-12 mpg. I changed injectors almost a year ago. Tried different tuners, put an air dog 150 on, nothing changed. I had 35" mud grapplers on it, changed to 33" mild all terrain, gained a couple mpg. Still isn't what it should be. Had a diablo on it, now have a smarty sr. on it. Have tried every single tune from 0-9, doesn't seem to change mileage at all. Is there an update for my smarty that will help me at all? Do I need to take it to dodge and have them update it? Or do I have any options to change it?
