i notice now when i start my truck cold i get a puff of white smoke? is this a sign of a bad injector? its a 05 with 75k miles on it. just the one puff and thats it? how can i test them that there is a problem with them?> how do they test them?

same with my new to me 05, little white puff idles a tad rough for 10 seconds, then good to go. subscribing...

You are seeing the longer crank because of the common rail fuel system. They use electronically engaged injectors. The extra crank time for the common rails allow the computer to sense where the crank shaft is via the crankshaft sensor. When the engine cranks over three or sometimes more revolutions, the computer finds top dead center of the intake stroke of # 1 cylinder and fires the injector, and then number 5, and so on.

On the older mechanical fuel system of the 98, the injector opens because of pressure. So it only takes the bare minimum of 1 revolution for the pressure to build in the injection pump and the injector to open and it doesn't matter which injector gets pressure first, it could start the first injection with any of the 6 cylinders.

I just took my 06 with 34000 on it in today for the above symptoms + my oil level was rising slightly due to the diesel leaking past the piston i believe. They said the #6 injector was leaking and are replacing it under the cummins 5/100000 warranty

Just a puff of white smoke MAY not be an issue. Dodge will tell you that white smoke up to a minute or minute and a half is normal. BS, a puff is not bad, anything after that and especially with rough idle is a sure sign of injector issues. They replaced one on mine, then a short time after the problem returned. The tech then wrote up his diagnosis so Dodge would approve all 6 being replaced. That was at around 40K miles. I now have 102K and running strong.

alot of ways to tell... one would be rough start/idle...

more than a puff after idling, or acceleration..

check your oil, if it smells like fuel, then you have a leaking injector...

like stated unburnt fuel sitting in the piston bowl causes the white, especially from a injector leaking down after shutdown, also remember leaking fuel will travel into the crankcase, and cause problems like overheating, high egt's, thinning the oil, and if you overload a cylinder, it can melt it down....

well i started my truck this morning. puff of smoke. i was running it for about and hour, then shut it down for about 2 hours started it back up and i got a puff of white smoke again. i figured it only did it when it was sitting over night. also seems to be a little stumble when starting to. but everything seems to run fine. also i notice that my cp3 kinda has a real slow leak. just kinda damp on the bottum?

well i took the banjo bolt out of my pressure releif valve and started it and it was pooring the fuel out. would this cause my problems

#13 ·
It would cause a long crank to start because the CP3 would have trouble building pressure but it shouldn't cause an injector to leak. Get a rail cap and pressure gauge or get the relief valve replaced and it should solve any long cranking to start but you still have an injector leaking somewhere.

If you mean oil coming out of the crankcase breather tube, yes. A leaking injector can result in fuel filling up the crankcase, causing the oil/fuel mixture to come out of the breather tube.

One reason that some dealers aren't quick to check/replace injectors when a customer complains of white smoke and slight misfire on cold starts, is that the Dodge flow chart for white smoke and misfire on cold starts says that it's normal if it clears up within one minute, and should be expected if the engine is operated in cold temps (especially if it's just warm enough to not have your grid heater cycle) or at altitude.......

5. Start the engine: Start the engine following normal starting procedures and allow the
engine to run at idle. Determine when the white smoke disappears. If the white smoke
disappears within one minute, it is normal. If the engine is operated in cold ambient
conditions and/or at altitude, white smoke at start-up is expected.

ok but i dont seem to got any rising oil levels or smell of fuel in my oil? i dont know if i got a bad injector. im just wondering would if being that my pressure releif valve is popped would it cause it or should i still look into my injectors? and how can i test if the injectors are bad?

sometimes my truck will start idleing rough when i first start it so i'll run some atf through it and it cleans it right up.. not long ago i had a bad vibration and a bad knocking sound.. my uncle who is a mechanic said that my rod bearing was going out on one piston and the slack was causing the vibration and noise.. made perfect sense.. but i ran two quarts of atf on a tank and i haven't had a problem since.. idk..

FYI, the atf trick was used on older diesels but is not recommended on newer common rails. Too many friction modifiers if atf that will do damage to cp3 and injectors.

While injectors cause many of the issues in any common rail injection system, testing them requires the right tools and knowledge. You have to start with the basics, supply pressure and scanning the vehicle. Volumetric testing of the injector, pump and pressure relief valve return fuel should be conducted in any diagnosis as well. These are the procedures that your local Dodge dealer will use to determine your issue.

The problem is no Dodge dealer can actually test your injectors outside of the engine. Nozzle atomization cannot be check nor can they be flow tested in the engine. That is why in many cases they will replace sets of injectors instead of the one or two failing ones. This is great if you are under warranty but sucks if you have to pay the bill.

One key thing to remember injectors are like spark plugs, they don't last forever.

so do you guys think i got injector problems or could it be that my releif valve is popped and has low rail pressure? could driving it with the releif valve hurt my injectors?

#22 ·
k guys i took the banjo bolt out of the prv again and i maid a mistake. the fuel isnt comeing out of the prv. it is comeing out of the piping that the banjo bolt goes through? should there be fuel coming out of it?

Just had this done myself. My dealer waould have charged $45 if he did the test and found nothing wrong. Because he did find #2 and #3 injectors were leaking I didn't get charged. The test took about 35 minutes and was all done electronically.

I pleaded the case that Dodge knows there is a problem with their injectors, that is why they came out with an updated part number in late 06. Even Chrysler themselves say it should last 4 or 5 times longer than the originals. And why replace them 1 or 2 at a time, why not just do them all at once and save everyone the hassle? So they agreed and supposedly gave me a 6 pack.

I just replaced all of mine. My trucks symptoms were from alot of noise from my pre injection cycle, its sounded like big time timing rattle so i decided enough as enough my truck was starting to sound like a power stroke so last month we checked the efficiency of all the injectors and noticed #4 was only at 92%, tossed that one in, no change then did #5,#6 th truck deffinately woke up but still had that nasty noise, just replaced #1-#3 and its running tip top, this noise has stemed back from when I ran an Edge box.

Whats weird is looking at all the old injectors and they had a nasty build up of carbon around the tips. I dont idle the truck and im pretty good about using the skinny pedal. so maybe next time, which Im sure there will be its aftermarket injectors

well guys my truck sat all weekend. went to start it today expecting a big puff of white smoke and not a drop came out of it?

Just noticed this morning in 56 degree weather, a pretty good puff of white smoke floating down the driveway when starting my truck and still some haze from the pipe for a while. Never noticed it before. Seems to smoke a little more when driving now too.
Has yours always done that? Or did you just notice it?

Any recomendations for aftermarket injectors?
