Hello everybody. I am new to this forum so excuse me if I post this in the wrong area. Also, I searched this and could not find any answers. Maybe I searched the wrong keywords, if I did, I apologize. So anyways I have a 1993 250 cummins with the 518a tranny and ve pump for about a year now. I know the pump is turned up, but not to sure how much. I want to set it back to stock settings so I can tune it myself and know where it is. My question is how do I do that exactly lol? I need answers for the power crew, the "smoke" screw, and The Star wheel.Sorry if this is a dumb question. Thank you.

a good "baseline" for tuning that i usually use is to do this

fuel(power) screw - bottom it out, then back it out 3 turns.
smoke screw - flush with the inside of the AFC cover
star wheel - bottom it out, then back it out 3 turns.

from there, you'll probably want to turn the fuel screw in 1-2 turns and raise the star wheel up another 1-3 turns.

only true way to set it back to "stock" would be to put it on a flow bench. but who wants stock? yuck! lol.

smoke

I'm having trouble with my ve pump also. I had it set up nice but then messed with it again now i have heavy black smoke when i go up through the gears. I set every thing back like you said but that just took away any power i had and i still have black smoke. I can't figure out how to get a happy medium . satisfactory power with livable smoke. right now its so bad I'm afraid to go by cops with it. Once i set it back to (baseline ) any idea what order i should mess with to tune it up ? btw its all stock

still smoking

ok now I'm really stuck. Finally got around to being able to work on the truck again. tried turning up the star wheel one and 1/2 turns . still smoked . So got ticked off and figured id go all out. Turned the star wheel all the way up as far as it would go. put the fuel pin back in with the dot facing back of pump; Least fuel possible, then took the smoke screw out and just put it back in till it just touched the diaphragm. Took it out for a ride and it still smokes a lot when shifting up through the gears. it is all stock. and i did recheck the timing and its fine both pins line up. whats odd is even with every thing backed off as far as it will go it still runs pretty good, A bit less power then I'm used to but very drivable. How can i stop this black smoke ?????

smoke

Yeah some one mentioned the line earlier. Its clear and seals good. its a steel line with flare fittings. the spring is there i have the green on the star wheel and the red on the diaphragm . Even if its up side down i can see it causing this much smoke

smoke

the engine has 97K. funny thing is this all started with a leak. Last summer i was leaking coolant between the head and block. also leaking rear main seal. so I took the engine out and had a head job done on it and replaced all the seals and gaskets in it then put it back together. I pull the pump off the engine but didn't change any thing . just replaced the gasket and out it back on. Timing pins line up. injector pump marks are lined up,. I don't even have it advanced. altho i did try that and id didn't make any difference . but ever since i put it back together I've had this smoke problem
