I've got my truck to do this once before doing a key cycle and holding the ODO reset or something. I can't seem to find any documentation on how to do this. Can anyone help?

flick the key on and press the trip meter knob on the dash right away and hold it. it usually take 10-20 seconds for mine to pop up.

That's what I was doing but I'll try it again! Thanks!

Just tried it, worked for me a couple of ways.

Key on, immediately press and hold ODO button = displays hours
Press and hold ODO button, then turn key on = instrument cluster test twice, various codes displayed in the ODO display, then when the test is done it displays engine hours.

I'm at 1328 hours @ 72991 miles = 54.96MPH average.

You guys over think things too much. Get in the truck, close the door, turn the key on, make sure the miles are showing and not the trip miles, then press and hold the trip button. It will take about 7 seconds or so. Then once the hours come up you can let go and the hours will stay displayed until you either turn the key back off or start the engine.

Now for the other question. Mins shows what I think is hrs and something else. What does the icon look like. What I get is a cluster test and then something that looks like (X represents numbers) = XXX followed by I I XXX

any ideas which one is the hours? The truck only has 30k on it and the math on both seems somewhat right :confused013:

I still think you may be getting the wrong reading, it was pretty simple when i tried it... i didn't have to use speed or anything, in fact when i turned the key on, the trip meter was showing, so i pushed the button once to turn it to mileage, then once it was there i pushed and held the button until it showed up. It str8 up says "hrs XXXX"

Hmmm it must be. I'll try it again tonight if I happen to drive it today and it gets warmed up.

Finally got it to work. 1083 hrs @ 38,000 miles. I'm not doing too good, I guess I idle it a bit much or something.

I found my engine hours today. While driving, I was going through the EVIC. Went down to vehicle info and found oil pressure, coolant temp, trans temp, and engine hours. I think it was 3rd or 4th toggle down but it was in there. Just thought I'd share.

BTW I'm at 889.

Sounds like they use 35MPH average as the guideline, which I seem to recall reading before. If your average speed, total miles divided by engine hours, is less than 35 then they can hassle you about excessive idling or related problems.

Using their math or miles/hours cannot tell you how long the engine has spent idling, though. I believe the ECM actually logs idle time, which is time spent below 1100 or 1000 RPM (IIRC). The truck could be a farm truck that spends its time in 4WD Low or never leaving 1st or 2nd gear, the engine running 1500+ RPM the vast majority of time, and as a result the average speed would be below 35MPH yet the truck spent very little time idling.

Can't tell actual idle time just by hours and odometer alone.

I have checked my truck which is my DD and my average speed came to 34.75. Did I mention I have slept and idled in it a time or two.

My moms work truck is 120k with some where around 2000hrs on it. 59 MPH which doesn't surprise me.

Dads is 102k and around 6000 hours so 16mph average... can you say oilfield truck lol

Mine was most defiantly a work truck, 5714 hrs on 151k miles. Plus the huge radio wiring harness I pulled out from under the dash, plus the headache rack, plus the new frontend lol.
