how long do injectors last?

I have a 05 2500 with 203,000 miles on the clock. The truck runs great starts easy no black smoke unless i go wide open throttle and even at that its just a puff and that can not be repeated. It gets on average 16mpg -17mpg . I am not sure if the injectors have been replaced and I'm am curious to how long they last. Do you think they have been changed on my truck?

I'd say the average is around 135,000miles.
The high side is usually around 230,000. Yes some go more just saying average high side.

When you have old worn injectors they can fail two major ways. Returning too much which makes you eventually loose rail pressure and power then slow or no start.
OR they can stick open from the worn clearances causing low rail pressure, possible slow or no start, High cylinder temp on that cylinder and most importantly This can eat an engine for breakfast.

When these are replaced and they are worn the truck owner says wow it idles so smooth runs so much better and quieter meaning they should have replaced them long ago.

No re-mans or you wind up in the same boat again or worse.

Is injector failure a problem with all years of common rails? I thought the 04.5+ trucks didn't have the injector issues?
If you change your fuel filter regularly and I would recommend a 2 micron secondary filter system your injectors should last a long time.

The problem isn't with the injectors as much as it is with the OEM fuel filtration on pre-EPA '07 common rails. Chrysler let the bean counters in and they put a 10 mic fuel filter in the housing when Bosch and Cummins both spec 5 mic minimum. When they started eating injectors Chrysler went to 7 but still isn't enough!!!

Both the '03-'04 and '04.5+ can have an injector stick open and melt a piston, '04.5 are a bit more likely since the injector spray angle is tighter and the piston bowl non re-entrant.

I replaced my injectors at 201k and I believed them to be the original sticks. Puking a cloud of white smoke out in the middle of the forest for a short time scared me enough to do them, but certainly glad I did!

It's inherent to all engines that have injectors from turbines to gassers to diesels. They are a wear item and the pressures, tolerances, and duty cycles have only become more and more taxing on injectors since common rails were introduced. Some are over 5 injection events per cylinder power stroke to meet emissions and trying to quiet them down for some reason.

I think it's better than the old non common rails. I change the old boat ones out every 750-1000 hrs on man engines.

200,000 miles is over 4,000 engine hours for most people. A lot of great diesel engines should be at least top end re-built by the manufactures book at 5,000 hours.

EDIT: I won't deny injectors are getting better and better every year.
