The easiest way to tell, is to look on the drivers side of the valve cover and on there, there is a white sticker, with a section/slot that reads "Avertised HP" and if it says 305, then you have the HO version of the 2003's.

Really, it's not a bad truck to start off with,, Just look at my sig to see what I've done to my 03 SO, though the mods are still ongoing.

Ah ha! Must be!

That may explain why my '03 isn't as snappy as my '04 was before I totalled it. I have all the same stuff on my '03 but it's not nearly as ratical as my '04 was. Make sense?

I thought the automatic had less HP than the standard???
Couldn't his truck still be an HO but automatic transmission.
I know for the first few months of 2003 Dodge was still using the standard output engine but after they went to the HO the horse power was decreased for the automatic transmission, but it was still the HO engine with common rail injection....just de-tuned.
does this sound accurate?
I'm buying a 2003 cummins this week and still don't know if it's an HO or not because of this confusion (it's in another state).

Wrong answer.

2003 S.O. Federal Emissions: 250HP/460lb.ft. Available with NV4500 or 47RE
2003 S.O. Calif. Emissions: 235HP/460lb.ft. Available with NV4500 or 47RE
2003 H.O. Federal Emissions: 305HP/555lb.ft. Only available with NV5600
2003.5 The 47RE was replaced by the 48RE automatic transmission and available with the H.O.

The line was never "purged" The last 47re on the line in a Ram frame was on the carrier ahead of the first 48RE frame on the line. The ONLY thing that was purged was the transmission line itself. And the ACTUAL start up date after Christmas Vacation in 2003 was Thursday January 2nd if you want to get technical.

oops missed it by a day! :S:
Still, If the truck isn't in front of you can't admit that 8th position "C" or "6" is easier can we? Stay on point. Done.
