Four Wheel Drive Problem

I recently bought a 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 DRW. I had to put it in 4wd a while back to pull a hay trailer up out of a field and noticed the truck was jerking and making popping noises. Later, I tested it in low and high getting the same results. I know the 4wd is working because it has got me out a couple of times, but I would like to get the loud popping and jerking fixed. Any ideas what my problem could be?

I get this if i turn sharp while in 4wd, is that normal? i noticed both my half ton chevy's used to do it a little at sharp turns but they were IFS, this is first solid front axle truck

If you are on a solid surface then yes, tires need some give and slip if using 4wd. Can be worse in 4Low.

Sharp turns on non-slick will cause binding in the driveline, that is normal. The popping that the OP has is a transfer case issue. Chain in the case has most likely stretched and will need a rebuild or a new t-case. To explain it better the popping and jerking is almost as if you were riding a bicycle that was in between gears. The chain is stretches so when you torque it, it rides up on one of the gears and then slams back into place. It will do this every time you put it in 4wheel. Since its happening in both 4H and 4L I would venture to guess this is the issue. You can have someone put a scope in the fill plug and look for you. 4WD will work but it will make tons of noise and will wear out the other parts in the t-case. When the chain does this it pulls the gear to the side and can wear out bearings on teh gears in the t-case or take teeth off the gears. Better to get it checked out and rebuilt if needed.

Thanks for the info, I guess I will get the Transfer case checked out. This sounds like it could get expensive...

I was just driving on the icey roads when I heard a "bang bang POW" and truck locked it down. Luckily where I was, the ice had almost melted down to pavement in the ruts and so I skid to a stop involuntarily. Now in 2wd, truck makes a constant cycling noise that I can only describe it as if the mud flaps were rubbing on the tires. In 4wd, it makes the noise only when you let off accelerator. No noise in 4wd when depressing accelerator. WTF HAPPENED!?

Check your axle u-joints. Seen them spread the yoke apart enough to stop the truck before.

all the joints appear to be tight? drive shaft joints?

if all check out, you may have a problem in the transfer case.

WOW!!! Low on oil or something? Any idea what happened to cause it?
