Verify starter has constant power, and that the solenoid receives 12v when the key is turned to start. You could even run a jumper wire between those two connections to see if the starter engages.

My bet is starter contacts. Have you noticed a few times before now when you only get a click from the starter? If so that proves the contacts are at fault.

Sounds like you burn't a orange fusible link out on top of the left fenderwell.

Fill out your signature not all the 1st gens are the same.

I had the same problem a while back, turned out the large black wire that plugs in right below the positive cable was not pushed together all the way. :banghead: Pushed it together and black taped it (the old snap together tab was broke off) and haven't had a problem since.

I have a similar issue. My truck just died while driving. Some electrical worked- some didn't. I took down the fuse box and all the fuses looked fine. I got my test light and checked the back of the fuse box. The blue wire is dead. The red wire is hot. Ive run a wire from the blue to the red with a toggle switch. Switch on I have ignition and it will start. I can take the key out but have to turn the switch of to get the truck to turn off. I'd rather not start hacking until I have a good idea of what I'm doing. I've looked at a few fusible link replacement threads. Are there any that are very detailed? Is the "duckbill" fusable link the only thing on the fat black wire going to battery ? Colors of wires ? What they are? What they control ? Is there a wire color chart with description of what that wire color does ( like trailer lights are color coded )? Thanks

What year is your truck? The orange fusible link is usually the one that you loose the starter and FSS when you turn the key on.

My truck had the same issue, turns out it was the ignition switch that the key goes into, I could turn the key and everything would come on but when i went all the way forward the truck wouldnt start. I just went to the junk yard and got a new switch with key out of a 96 ram and it works fine now. Only thing is that I have 2 keys, one to start the truck and one for the doors.

My truck is a 92. I posted when this first happened. It was suggested that I change the ignition switch . I changed the ignition switch. It still would not crank. That's when I got out my test light. I got it running but really want it to be done right.

What did you do to get it running? And what did the test light show you?

I took down the fuse box and all the fuses looked fine. I got my test light and checked the back of the fuse box. The blue wire that feeds one group of fuses is dead. The red wire that feeds the next set of fuses is hot. Ive run a wire from the blue to the red on the fuse side of the box with a toggle switch in the middle. Switch on I have ignition and it will start. I can take the key out but have to turn the switch off to get the truck to turn off.
