I have a 2024 3500 HO SRW with a bad tick at 3000km. It was checked by the dealer at 7000km and at 12000km, they took it in for Hydraulic lifters. Well I was told 2 to 3 days, it is now 4 weeks and they cant find what is causing the issue. The dealer has been good to me but the warranty department at Ram doesn't seem to be in a rush to fix it. They say they won't rebuild it or replace it till they know that it is not a larger problem engine line wide. Wondering if anyone has had a similar issue. If so what was the fix.

Thanks

I had a 2023 DRW 3500 HO that developed a tick after an oil change. Once it warmed up it went away. They were unable to pinpoint the exact cause, but later just told it was "normal operation".

I traded that Ram so I never found anything more out. I had planned to drive it until it either crapped out or the warranty ended originally.
I had about 11K on it. I am curious to see if my 2024 does the same thing after the first oil change.

Now my 2024 does make a noise which is the fan shroud vibrating...if I place my finger on the shroud it stops

This was the tick on the 2023.

Thanks for the info. The tick I had started before first oil change and did not go away when it was warm. It would start at idle and go away at 1500RPM at first around the 3000k mark. Then around the 7000k make it went away at 2200RPM until it shifted gears then it was back. By 12000k it never went away at all. It also had a loss of power in second gear if a trailer was on it would bog down and down shift. The dealer flashed the transmission and that help the shift but not the tick. Thanks for the videos it helps. Wish I had recorded my truck.

One of the things most noticeable to me, now that I’ve finally come over to the D-side, is how much quieter and smoother diesels….especially these Cummins diesels, have become versus the “good ol’ days” of “Smoke, Rattle and Roll”.
But I wonder, if this May be why we are seeing complaints about “ticking” sounds and such, now that those minor noises are capable of being heard over the rest of the exploding and mechanical thrashing that is going-on… (?)

No, these are not normal diesel sounds typically...especially when it wasn't present from when folks drive them off the lot.

My 24 has a tick I heard after the 1st oil change, but it may have been happening before. Mine stops at idle, and can only be heard when going passed a barrier or fence with foot on the accelerator. I think mine is exhaust related.

Sorry this is going to be a little long and may copy it and post it in another thread.

I've been meaning to post about this particular tick above for a bit, but my findings are not complete. I change my own oil, have done so on my 08,14,and now 22. After my third oil change on the 22 I noticed the exact same tick noise posted above, could hear it on the left but seemed more so on the right. I took a stethoscope to it but could never pinpoint it's exact location. I also have done UOA at ever oil change. First I use Valvoline PB 10w30 since factory fill and this was my 3rd change. I change my oil cold, let the truck set over night before going out there and removing drain plug, drive way is at a slight incline, and I think it helps get more oil out. Been doing this exact way for last 3 ram 6.7s. I screw on a dry non prefilled oil filter and dump in 3 gallons of oil and go about my business. In my case when truck has sat over night and I check the oil level at my particular drive way it is always a little over the full mark. between in 1/8 to 1/4". When checking oil level as per manual run it to operating temp and let sit for 15-30 minutes it's dead on the mark. On my first oil change I replaced the drain plug with a Fumoto drain valve.

So this oil change I did when the above noise started was different. I was getting ready to go on vacation to Tennessee and my time to get oil change done was tight. So, I get off shift one morning and only let the truck cool for about an hour before draining the oil, change filter, and dump in oil. That's when I noticed the noise. Oil level check per manual was just a touch over full line and of no concern to me. Cold level check was above my normal readings from past. Drove to work a couple of times, had coworkers try and help me pinpoint location, no joy. I drove it to Tennessee, truck ran great but the ticking noise was bothering me and on my mind the whole time. One morning in Tennessee I got up in the morning went out to truck and drained out about 1/2 quart of oil from the fumoto drain valve and instant change in noise. like 100 percent change. I get random tick here and there but not like above. My findings aren't complete because I will need to do a UOA after next cold oil change and see if noise is still gone and check wear metals. I will post updates after next oil change.

All that being said my case could be a one off. Giving that there are probably more people that change their oil hot, have dealer do it, or some lube place do it. Or it could be these new trucks are a little sensitive to oil level. I don't know Hray

The tick is still gone and I haven't changed the oil yet to do an oil analysis. I have over 10K on this oil now, waiting to get over 13.5K so it will be a good comparison. I will update once I do the UOA at oil change.

See post #13. Changed oil today like I normally do and still no tick. Unfortunately as I was carrying in my stuff I dropped my oil sample and there isn't enough oil to send in. I can't use what's in my catch basin as it is cross contaminated with a bunch of other fluids. I'm a little pissed at myself. I also switched to Rotella T5 10w30 because I normally order Valvoline PB through Cummins and it was out of stock. Rotella was cheaper on Amazon. I ran either Rotella or VPB in my 14 with no differences on UOA. So the tick is still gone and will have to wait another 13-15k for UOA. Hray

I definitely get the typewriter tick after an oil change for a few hundred miles. Noticeable at idle and at any temperature, this is normal. I still also have a low end faint, erratic tick. I’m already on Hamilton’s conversion, so definitely not valve train. I’m thinking it’s the scissor gear, or perhaps a thrust bearing (doubtful)
