DPF delete and resale value

Dropped truck off today for exhaust system service. Message screen said 5mph limit in 200 miles and all that.

Truck is a 2013 and out of bumper to bumper warranty. Unknown if exhaust system warranty will cover repairs. So, depending on cost of repair, might be cheaper if everything just fell off.

But -- I'm planning to trade in a year or less (hopefully less ?). Anyone have experience trading/selling a deleted truck? How's it affect value/marketability?

Relevant: I'm in Florida. To my knowledge (please correct me if I'm wrong) inspections are rare to nonexistent.

Thanks

They don't do inspections in Florida. If trading in, I would imagine that it would hurt value as technically a dealer is not allowed to sell a deleted truck. They could get hit with a big fine. With that said, when shopping for my truck last year I found a dealer in Orlando selling a 13 that had been deleted and his price was just as high as everyone else's.

What code did it throw when the service message popped?

Could be nothing much.

You for sure won't get the cost to delete back when trading in and may run into an issue trading a deleted truck anyway. You would probably be better off selling it privately.

That's kinda what I suspected. Might end up paying to take it off, then paying to put it back on.

How likely is it that a dealership would even notice the delete when trading? I'm not one to pull a fast one on anybody, but same dealership did $2-3k worth of work to exhaust system before warranty ran out. It's getting a bit old.

Sorry, I'm not sure what code, and it's at the dealership now. It might be small, or it might be covered by exhaust warranty.

Really, I'm getting the cart ahead of the horse until they diagnose, but if cost of repair and delete are similar, it will be tempting.

I know deleting won't make it worth more (maybe to the right person, I guess), I just don't want to end up with an expensive problem at sell/trade time.

Follow up question:

I have about 10 months of power train warranty left. I assume deleting will void? Probably at least engine portion?

Thanks again, guys!

As far as disclosure when trading it in, you'll most likely have to sign a disclosure statement that the trucks emissions systems have not been removed or altered. Falsifying that document probably would not be in your best interests.

Argh, you're right. I remember something like that when I traded the last one.

So what does everyone else do? Keep stock components and swap back before trade?

No surprises there. Still kinda crappy. Power train is under warranty pretty much till the time I plan on getting rid of it. Another negative.

Well crap. I wanted a reasonable excuse to do something bad/fun.

Thanks for the info!

There are many people like myself who would never consider buying a deleted truck, if shopping used. That said, the prices are so high on gently used 4th gens that I would only buy new.

Just trade it in now, and any funds required to fix could be put towards down payment. Kill two birds with one stone. Problem solved

Florida Law prohibits the operation, sale, lease, or transfer of title of any automobile or light
-duty truck (1975 or newer, 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight or less) that has been tampered with. "Tampering"
means the dismantling, removal, or rendering ineffective of any air pollution control device or system
which has been installed on the vehicle by the vehicle manufacturer except to replace such device or
system with a device or system equivalent in design and function to the part that was originally installed
on the motor vehicle (316.2935, Florida Statutes).

Every last dealer is required by law to fill out and sign form HSMV 84058 "Vehicle Air Pollution Control Statement" I got one when I bought my daughters car a few months ago. My son bought his ford from a huge used truck dealership and it was already deleted. I wonder if they filled out that form falsely or skipped it. Clearly there are some dealers willing to deal in deleted trucks, but it will limit your options. A lot of people will not buy a deleted truck, they would rather detete it themselves and know it was done right, not to mention some people delete and tune them and then abuse the heck out of the truck with pushing the power to the limit. So deleting it also limits your buyers. If you have plans to sell it I would not delete it.

Deleted is a selling point around where I live in redneck land. My dealer pulled me aside and talked extensively about deletes when I bought my trucks. He said as long as I had all the parts in good condition in the bed he would take it on trade. One of my buddies did just that on a very clean 4th gen and the truck was gone in less than 2 weeks on the lot. Wouldn't hurt to ask your dealer, some are more friendly about it than you would imagine.

This is just me being nosey and reading through posts about regen since my buddy is having problems with his truck. But atleast around Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama there are numerous dealerships selling 3rd and 4th gens that are fully deleted especially when they are already out of factory warranty. I would say it would be something that i would personally look to be done when buying a truck just because its something I wouldnt have to spend the money doing once i purchased it (again, if its out of warranty.)
But I'm just a 2nd gen owner so i dont know much. :)

So a few things to consider.

Florida doesn't have inspections but like others have said, you do have to sign a form stating you didn't mess with the emissions when you go to trade it in. If you do end up deleting it, you'll probably spend somewhere upwards of $2500-$3500 to do so depending on what you end up deciding to do. Once you spend that amount of money, you're stuck with selling it privately. No tax break on the next truck you buy. Another loss.

I delete all my trucks and I always sell them privately but I also keep my trucks for a long time so it ends up a wash in the end. I have a brand new exhaust system sitting in my garage and I'm in Naples. If they want to charge you a ton of money to fix whatever is wrong, let me know. We may be able to work out a deal.
