Brake Pedal problem.

2010 2500 Dodge Larmie with 6.7 Cummings. I’ve got something going on with my brake pedal. When I apply the brake pedal very lightly (like you would tap to cancel the cruise) the pedal feels like it is backing off. When you first go to engage the brake pedal you can feel it lightly pushing back against your foot in the upward direction. I would say it feels like the antilock is starting prematurely. Don’t know any other way to explain it. I took it into the Dealership and they did test drive it and then took out a new truck they had on the lot and said they did feel what I was talking about and acknowledged that the new truck did not do it. They have no explanation of what it could be at this time. They said the anti-lock’s were operating properly and that they were checking with Corporate to see if they had any explanation. The truck seems to Brake OK but I know it is not normal as this is not how it has acted for the first 20,000 miles. It’s been acting like this since mid December. It seemed to happen after the first snowfall and after the first time I felt the antilock kick in this winter. Any one else experience this?

At any point, did you have a hissing sound from down around your feet while driving straight and not braking? When the inner teflon liner slipped inside my PS line, it hissed for a day, then slipped all the way into the brake booster the next day. After that, my pedal was a little hard to press at first, but once the pedal starts moving, it feels pretty normal...but when it hits the point where the brakes start to bite, the pedal kicks back at you a little. If you continue braking, it sometimes kicks again when you start to release the pressure. It's a little tricky to describe, but does this sound right?

I never heard any hissing sound while driving or braking. The Dealership did mention something about the brake booster, although I have no idea what that is. I'm a novice when it comes to this but I do recall him saying something about the brake booster. The pedal never was hard to push but the rest of your description sort of sums it up. Yes it does seem to kick back when you get into the full braking session. It's more noticable though when you first start applying it.

You said it started right after the first time antilock kicked in this winter...could very well be that the rapid pulsing of the antilock shoved that teflon liner all the way into the booster in one go.

If they haven't done so already, I'd have them pull the lines at the booster, and verify that the inner teflon liner is still intact and in place. If that thing is inside the booster, you could go from bad to much worse with no warning whatsoever.

There is a TSB out for the cap that goes on the power steering pump reservoir (also provides power assist to the brake system aka. Hydro-Boost). According to the TSB, the defective cap creates too much pressure in the system and can cause the brake pedal to be slow to release. I would double check with your dealer and be sure you have the new cap. The recall affects trucks built from March 2009 through October 2010.

FYI...I have experienced both the "defective" p/s cap, and the plastic liner in the p/s hose finding its way into the master cylinder.

Just got off the phone with Chrysler World's Service Mgr. First thing he did mention was the recall on the PS Cap and that my service records did indicate that it was replaced. Secondly, one of the responses they received back from their contact was to do a booster check on my truck. He had me go into the truck and with the vehicle turn off, he had me depress the brake pedal three times very hard. Then with the brake pedal still depressed, he had me start the engine. He then said the brake pedal should slightly go down and then pop back at me. This it did. He said that was the brake booster test and from what I told him it did appear successful. He's keeping me posted and told me that they still have a service order open. In the meantime, I'm going to check the power steering cap and to make sure its venting.

Too funny the dealer gets the customer to do diagnostics...
I had the same thing happen to my truck pedal pulse, kinda weird I would have my foot on the brake and I could feel the pedal start to rise. Shortly after this happened the hissing started, into the dealer... new hydro boost unit upper flex hose also replaced due to teflon liner sliding into boost unit. Sounds like a common problem as it has been happening on trucks since 08.:party018:

Checked the PS steering cap, it seems alright. I'm calling the Dealership today to set up an appointment to have the hydro boost and lines checked. I can't say anything but good about them. This Dealership is about a 90 mile drive but has been worth it so far. I posted another thread about my engine engine light going on and brought it in to the local Dealership three times with no fix and the one in Wisconsin fixed it the first time there. They have been excellent to work with. When I spoke to them yesterday, I took it upon myself to try the hydro test rather than drive the 90 miles to have it done. The Shop Manager walked me through it while we were on the phone together. Next step is getting it in for additional testing. I want the brakes working properly as my fifth wheel comes out of storage in two months and I want the brakes to work properly when I'm towing 36 feet behind me. I'll keep you posted with updates. By the way, this forum has been great! So nice to get this feedback.

Brake update

Had to cancel my appointment on Monday and rescheduled and brought the truck in today. I printed out to the responses (no names included) that I got from this forum on similar problems that I was having. I brought them with me today and had the mechanic read them. I asked that he check out both the booster and the hoses that go to it. About two hours later he called me and said that the Teflon lining inside the hose had broken and had become loose. I went back to the dealership and he did show me the hose and the Teflon lining that was sticking out of it a good inch. It had broken off inside of the flexible part of the hose and had managed to get through the rigid section which has a sharp angle before it enters the booster and was sticking out the end of it a good inch or so. They have ordered a new hose and it will be in on Monday. I will update after it has been installed. I believe this will fix my problem. Thanks to all who responded as I wouldn't have had the similar complaints to bring in with me today.
