Am looking to replace my 2001 oem steering box. Looks like a lot of options. which ratio, one vendor says 18-1 best for diesel? one says 12.7-1 , what is the best way to go? I just want a steering box to ELIMINATE the constant wandering and correcting while I am driving. Can't take eyes off the road for a second, will be running in the ditch. I am looking at one Summit makes, also Borgeson. BTW, I have installed the Luke's Link, made very little difference. I am sure there are lots of folks who have the same problem. If this has been answered before, please have patience with the repeat question. Just refer me where to look. Thanks.

Looks like you have researched some already. Ask a question about steering on here and your going to get clobbered.

I will say my .02 cents worth. I have Borgeson and like it. Others will say they are junk. Some will say redhead and then again they have had problems with them. There is oem and others out there also and all have been covered. Best to say it's your choice, probably one is really no better than the other. That being said me myself knowing just how junkie the dodge front end is I would buy a steering brace right along with the steering box. DOR makes them and lots of others. Just search Dodge Ram steering brace. Now that's not all that causes steering wonder. Everything from ball joints, control arms, track bar, wheel bearings can also.

I would say buy which ever one you want and check about customer service to make sure if you have a problem you have support. Read all about the steering box first about installation. Borgeson you have to grind a flat spot on a adaptor for the install unless you buy the steering shaft also. Once you've replaced it then move on to the next item. Just keep your check book out.

Good luck and hope you don't get to much flack from the ones that think their the forum cops.

Thanks for an informed opinion. I plan to do a lot of research before I buy. My truck had the steering box replace at 25k miles under warranty. I now have 115k miles. I drive my truck with care, all front end linkage is tight, wheel brgs., ok, keep alignment up. I don't do any off roading. In other words, not abused in any way. I don't baby it, but am a careful driver. The most 4 wheeling it gets is in winter to get out my lane. My opinion is at this mileage, the steering should still be great, but is not. I will continue my quest for the best. Will update later on success, or failure.

Cop chiming in here! Do an evaluation and see what is loose first. The bearing preload is adjustable if it is the steering box, and no I'm not talking about the over center adjustment on the top. When was the last time it was aligned? Caster is huge in straight line performance. When you search around you'll be drowned by a thousand threads of guys who chuck money at the problem and have mix results. Diagnose/repair.

My angle... Most of the problem come from modifying the front axle with large tires, lift kits, it changes the geometry of the front end and adds stress. So if your truck is modified... Yes, I'll suggest you move up to upgraded box, steering brace, and all the other stuff. But if your running stock tire size and no lift kits then stock box is just fine. The other factor is most people never change the power steering fluid and then wipe out both the gear box and pump. To this day with 237k miles it still tight, no wondering, no leaks, no issues. My truck spends most of its life going up and down dirt roads and being off pavement. But you find all kind of pavement queens with lift kits and large tires with all kind of front end issues.

I would stay away from anything Borg ,, and steer towards Redhead .

I had redhead in another big truck , and its a good box.
Currently sporting a napa re man ,, 3.5 years later it steers ok. ( either my trac bar of the same age or steering box has worn some )

Speaking of ok , in my opp that's about all you get with this front end design. Please don't expect great.
Good luck

another vote to stay away from Borgeson. And stay away from the fast-ratio boxes.

I'm going redhead next time... and my borgeson shaft is shot in a year...

Cant decide if I should get it replaced under warranty or fix it correctly (with an oem one)

When I built my front bumper a few years ago, I tied the steering box into it, reducing frame flex. If your steering shaft moves at the same rate as your steering linkage, you may get away with a frame mounted steering brace. If your shaft moves without input on the linkage, I'll throw up some pics on what to tighten.
