I am trying to get some info on the company PhoenixFriction. I don't know if anyone has heard of them or if they are even on the same playing field as SouthBend or Valair.
Here's the deal, I am modding my 6.7L and eventually getting a compound setup with injectors. Just trying to figure out if this clutch will hold up or not.
Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

never heard of that company, but i have a ceramic Valair DD and im very satisfied with it. After 1,000 miles of driving it really has broken-in nice i would say

Yeah, my brother had a Valair in his pulling rig. It was a 99 24 valve, then I had a DD Southbend in my p-pumped 01...so I know both of those clutches are awesome...I'm just trying to figure out if these Phoenix Friction guys are for real or not. Their prices are low enough to make you wonder...

Ended up going with the kit: 05-124CK.5C Stage 5 from phoenix friction. Will let you know how it works out. Stock slutch has a little life left...expect to change out end of march/early april.

You want a video of what it sounds like now? With the occasional throw out bearing squeal? Or do you want me to wait until the new clutch goes in?

By the way, the clutch kit that I got is a full replacement for the stock clutch, flywheel, pressure plate and hydraulic actuator. I will keep you updated Powder Keg...

i have sb 3250 its a little noisy but sticks like a fly on sh!t let us know how the noise is on yours.

If you're planning on mods, I'd stick with Valair or Southbend. Phoenix friction advertises name brand stuff, but they substitute for cheap chinese parts.

I ran a phoenix friction for a couple months about a year ago. The hydraulics started to act up and they told me to check my pilot bearing. When i pulled the clutch it was literally falling apart. All of the buttons were missing and they wouldnt do chit to stand behind their product except say hey we will sell you another one... Save that money and buy a valair or southbend. You will get great customer service that stand behind their product every step of the way versus phoenix friction...

Already bought the phoenix friction...waiting on the flywheel to get drop shipped. I'll let everyone know how it works and what the noise is like when I get the clutch and everything in. if I have any problems with the new clutch, will let you guys know on that too.

Trying to post the video of the after install "rattle". Will insert a link also... I posted it up on youtube so you guys can see what the noise is like with a solid flywheel.

Those are the two links. If this doesn't work, you can always look up my videos on youtube under Jrhammo169...

Let me know what you think and I'll keep you updated on how the clutch performs.

Thanks! I wish we could not have the rattle though. I host put a DD in my buddies 03 5 speed. Not a single peep out of that clutch unless the pedal is all the way pushed in. I figure it's just the throwout bearing making that noise..

All dual disk clutches have a slight rattle when they are fully disengaged. So, no suprise there. But, I do wish that we could convert to a solid flywheel without the rattle. That dual mass flywheel is absolute crap! When I pulled the stock pressure plate and disc off the flywheel, I had at leat 3 inches of play between the inner and outer portions of the dual mass flywheel. SO, I will sacrifice a little bit of annoying rattle for the better clutch system, and hopefully someone some day comes up with a clutch that doesn't rattle at all for these trucks!

The rattle is gear rollover from engine spikes. You can put a better dampener on and it will help a bit. Gorilla Juice has also helped some people out. The reason you hear it so much is because of the cast aluminum case on the transmission letting the noise out and the dual mass flywheel isnt there to absorb the engine spikes anymore. All transmissions have gear rollover but everything before the g-56 had a cast iron case so it wasnt heard as much as the g-56.

7 qts of GJ in mine. Sounds close to stock when cold but also harder to shift. After everything warms up the noises come out but the shifting is smoother. I don't think its obnoxiously loud but its there - a trade-off I can accept for the extra holding power.

The DD organic has also been very smooth engagement right from the start. Less than 200 miles on it right now and I have no problems starting smoothly going forward (1st, 2nd or 3rd gear starts) or reverse.

Clutch questions

I deleted my 2007.5 at 68,000 miles. I used a Smarty Jr. set at the 40 Hp setting to get better MPG. The clutch started slipping when I got on it. I do not want the noise of a double disk. So my question is if anybody has tried a Valeo 63301405 clutch? I have seen them for about $650. The clutch uses a solid flywheel and has !5% more holding power. Is this enough of a clutch upgrade to hold the additional power? By the way the best MPG i have gotten is 21.7 hand calculated.

The rattle that i posted videos of is rattle that a solid flywheel with a single disk clutch plate will produce on your truck...

Anyway, only have maybe 100 or so miles on the clutch...so, I'll wait until around 500 miles to throw the programmer into full hot mode. Will keep you guys updated on the quality of this clutch system...

Update on the clutch guys! I've got about 2500 miles on it so far and the thing still grabs like a gorilla. As for the fuel milage...on a trip from Fort Dix, New Jersey to Blacksburg, VA, we averaged 28.5 MPG with the mini maxx in HOT and the cruise set on 75-80 mph. I get 22-24 on the average around town. Not bad...

Gorilla Juice is hands down the best lube for our G56's. Don't waste your time & money on any other lube, do it correct the first time.

#25 ·
drop those 2's down to one's and thats about right

My truck says I'm getting the same mpg's. 26-28. But when I hand calculate it averages around 18-22 with no load. Programers really mess with the truck computer.

I did the math...798.7 miles with a 30 gal fuel tank...running till the light came on, so it wasn't quite empty. But, do the math and it's about 26.6 highway. The 6 spd definitely helps and the solid flywheel is a great upgrade, not to mention the intake and exhaust. Anyway, whatever I'm getting I love the truck. I was a die-hard 5.9 guy for a while until I gave in and bought this one. Wouldn't trade it for anything!

30 Gallons? You must have got cheated. I have never seen one without a 36 Gallon tank. Keep up the posts. Would like to see how your clutch holds. My stock one is at 45K and with full deletes and only running stock to mild on the MM, I am still concerned for life of the clutch..

#29 ·
You are in fact right and I'm an Idiot for doing the math for 30 gallons...that would explain the astronomical numbers I'm getting. When I do the math right, it drops down to 22.1...

I apologize to everyone!:S:

Hell man, 22mpg is still nothing to laugh at. We do have 8,000lb(+) trucks making over 600ft/lb torque. This is typically mutually non-supporting numbers.

What do you guys think I should do for a clutch. I got an 11 with the G56 in it. And I want something with good holding power and little noise. I've got a 5inch turbo back, deleted, Mini max and S&B intake. Also lifted 4.5 and has 37x13.50x18 on it. I'm leaning towards the new SB 3250 dual disk. But have also heard good things about the Valair dual organic. What do you guys think?:confused013:

Also when I get on it in 4th or 5th or 6th the truck will like hop and hen rev way up. I've heard it's the tranny protection set in the mini max. I just think it's the clutch not being able to hold the power. But I don't understand the hop...
