1999 24v with engine problem

Was hoping to get some advice on an engine problem in a truck I am thinking of purchasing. Owner thinks that the tip of the injector broke off and poked a hole in the #4 piston because it pressurizes the crankcase and pushes a mix of diesel fuel and oil out a vent in the engine compartment.

Has anyone out there had this same problem, and how much damage was done to the engine? Can it be saved? Any ideas?

I appreciate any advice given!

Thanks,
Mike

Does It Run? If It Does It Should Smoke Like A Train. Usually When A Tip Comes Off It Gets Passed Out Trough The Exhaust And Doesn't Damage The Piston To Bad. Need To Check The Exhaust Wheel On The Turbo. It Should Have Some Damage.

He said it runs rough and smokes, but what about the pressure in the crankcase? That is what has me concerned about the piston.

He said when it happened he was hauling a trailer down the road and it started running rough and then all of a sudden shut off. He said it started right back up again and drove it straight to the truck stop and parked it. He says it is the #4 piston.

What do you think?

A single injector failure will not cause the truck to die. It will miss yes and run rough but not die...

Usually when a tip breaks or cracks, it'll dump fuel into the cylinder, and eventually score the cylinder and melt the piston. If there's that much pressure in the crankcase to where it's pushing oil out, chances are that the cylinder is scored.
Which this is true...

So now there is things here that don't make sense... Full shutdown of the engine points more to a failed VP44 than a single injector failure.

Well there is a way to find out...

1. Find out if there is error codes
OBD II Error Codes

2. Pull your injectors and inspect them also have the pop tested.

3. Do a compression test

4. Do a blowby test
