08.5 steering upgrade

So I am utterly confused. My tie rods are getting pretty bad on my truck, so i figured no problem, replace them. Look under the truck and I see what looks like the 08.5 steering upgrade. I'm excited that I already had it without knowing, but upset the rods were shot. Then I look again. The steering stabilizer is not clamped, it is bolted through like the old style was. So when I go to purchase my right outer tie rod, one cannot be found. I am about to dump $500 + in the next day or two on the REAL 08.5 steering upgrade, so if anybody knows something that I don't and can save me some money, please help!!!

I can't get it to work. Tried using attachment icon twice and it just times out

Do you have a Pro Comp lift on your truck? I remember that they used to include a different steering linkage setup back around 04-05.

Either way I would upgrade to the 08.5+ steering and either a Carli Low Mount or a Bilstein 5100 stabilizer.

I would however also suggest that you replace your current drop pitman arm with a new one from Pure Performance. The TRE at the pitman arm on the new style steering has a 15 degree angle on it that makes things worse when you flip it to the bottom. Newer drop pitman arms like the Pure arm correct for that by having a 15 degrees angle added to the TRE mounting point.

So I want to make sure that I understand this correctly. Mine is the old Y style. The new "T" style has the drag link going from the pitman arm to the passenger tie rod end instead of intersecting? I wish I could afford a carli stabilizer. I just can't swing the extra $200 to get Carli right now. Eventually I will get the Carli 2.5 kit, but for now, I have to stick within my budget, even if I don't want to. :banghead: So looks like its time to order that Mopar upgrade kit... Anybody know of a site that might offer a military discount on it?

Craig, my steering is actually just like the bottom picture. I know the pic I took isn't the best, but i couldn't get a bigger one to post. My tires are connected, obviously in two parts, but basically straight across. The drag link goes from that one up to the pitman arm. That's why I am so confused. But the steering stabilizer bolts through rather than clamping around. Take a closer look at the pic i posted if you can, and you will see what I mean.

I see what you're talking about and it's definitely not T steering as the draglink attaches to the top of the crossover, not the front. It's in the same style as the Mopar T steering but the TRE's are all in the wrong positions. It looks like you have Y steering but it's installed all wrong in order to make it fit your lift.

Well looks like I am back where I started. Time to order that Mopar kit. lol. At least now I know for sure that it is not right. I was so confused at the parts store. lol. I'll see what I can find for package deals, but looks like I'm probably gonna have to go with strictly Mopar for now. Thanks for the experience guys, I really appreciate it. I checked out Strapt before, but I'm looking for the best deal possible.

Looks nice, but i think im gonna stick with bolt ons for now. Dont have a welder anyhow. Thanks for the heads up thouhh. Good info.

You will be much happier with the 08.5+ upgrade. Without needing the pitman arm and doing the install yourself, it should be very easy to stay below $500. We always recommend that when people level or lift their trucks they switch to this style steering. The components are beefier and it is easier to maintain the proper geometry with a lift. Not to mention that quality stabilizers like the Carli low mount will bolt on to this setup.

Got great deal from Strapt performance! Got a package deal with Carli steering stabilizer for close to $300 cheaper than anywhere else. Strapt has definitely earned my business in the future. And thanks to Craig for all your help. Should have my stuff in before the weekend and get her runnin strong again.

So I just got my 08.5 steering upgrade w/ carli stabilizer kit in!! Came home to the box sitting on my front porch. So looks like I get to install this on Saturday. I did notice that it did not come with any instructions. I'm assuming unbolt the old one and bolt the new one in its place, and that's it? Any hints or tidbits of advice going in to this? And where do I find the torque specs? Thanks again to Craig for the hook-up and the awesome turn around time!

So I have looked everywhere.... Torque specs 08.5 steering upgrade for 2005 dodge ram 2500 4x4 anybody? Or at least a point in the right direction.

So I installed the upgrade kit today. Got to get it aligned, but I eyeballed it pretty good and took it for a quick test drive around the neighborhood. Handling soo much better.

Glad to hear you like it and got a great deal from Craig. This will be my next upgrade as my steering is starting to get sloppy.
