hey all just wanting some advice on my turbo / fuel set up, I purchased a holset h1e from a guy on ft carson he said it was very similar to an hx 40 maybe a little bigger... after I welded on a t4 adapter to my manifold and put it on I drove it and it would not spool to save its life... after it lit the thing only hit 20 psi, I have 150s in and just got an edge comp to see if that would help, only got more smoke and higher egts, would an external waste gate help me? whats going on with this thing? :confused013: could i need to add a timing programmer too?

what size is the exhaust housing? im thinking there a 16cm or 17cm which is pretty big might be causing slow spool... also check boost leaks like stated above. what rpm is it lighting at? what rpm is max boost at? fill out a sig so we have a little better idea of what your working with:thumbsup:

not missing any shop rags are you? how did the turbo blades feel like they spun? ok or drag?

Those big old turbos don't work well on our little Cummins. It was likely built for an 11 liter engine and was designed for 20psi boost.
I have an HX52 on the workbench I really don't know if I'll ever be able to use it on my engine.

I appreciate the help guys, Im not sure of the measurements i believe the exhaust housing is stamped 14, It doesnt start to spool untill around 1600 rpm max boost from 1800-2300 rpm, no boost leaks I blew off an ic boot and triple checked everything after that

well I deserve the moron of the year award. pulled it off to put on a new turbo, inside the exhaust housing is stamped 22. I assume this means 22cm? the flange that Ft Carson welded on is a T6 so it makes sense that the thing was so big I don't know how to measure the compressor but it looks smaller than my dtec 64

The H1E will have a larger 67mm turbine wheel, but the compressor side was available in a few sizes. The smallest the turbine housing can be is 16 but since it's a T4, it likely a 17 or 19.

Drunk on diesel kinda confused himself, but is right - the H1E is like the H1C of Hx35. It's just an older model that has been updated to flow more. Another comparison would be the HT3B is the older version that changed to the HT60 which is a huge upgrade in itself. The wheels are the same, but the housing changed to flows 1.33x the amount the HT3B.
