Which DEF do you recommend from the bottle?

Which DEF do you recommend from the bottle? I've been buying Mopar DEF from the dealer to ensure that I wouldn't have any warranty issues, but that stuff is expensive. I don't think it matters, but this is for an Ecodiesel, not the Cummins. Is there a DEF brand that you prefer and trust? I know this has been discussed before, but it seems like new information is coming out all the time on DEF. From what I have read, it's more about proper storage and staying within the expiration date than anything else, otherwise, they all meet specs.

I get bucees def and so far it has been cheaper than any pump prices i have found. Also the date is in plain english and right on the front. The stuff on the shelf is usually two weeks old.

I was one of the WK2 Ecodiesel owners and after reading multiple threads on the dealers denying warranty claims for DEF related issues I will only use Mopar DEF in my vehicles
I know they actually test the quality of the fluid at the dealerships in the service dept. What is to say that Mopar is not putting some special identifying chemical in the fluid so they know it is genuine Mopar fluid?
Also you will have a paper trail of the receipts with dates when the fluid was purchased that will help if they try to deny warranty for using another manufactures DEF claiming the bad fluid is causing the issues

How much of the denied warranty claims were due to bad DEF? And how much of the bad DEF was due to an expired product? I've read that DEF will crystallize when it gets old. My friend is a service manager at our local Ram dealership. He told me that most DEF related problems is due to people running it bone-dry. He said running it dry will screw everything up and result in a very expensive bill. On the other hand, he told me that there would be no questions asked if I kept using the Mopar DEF. So maybe you're right. I've been buying it from the dealer, but at $34 dollars per 2.5 gallon jug, this is getting ridiculous when I can buy it for $8.00 at Wal-Mart.

Chrysler doesn't manufacture DEF, they purchase it bottled and labeled. Denying warranty for not using Mopar DEF would be like denying warranty for not using Mopar oil, not going to happen. DEF carries an ISO rating. As long as what you use has the ISO number22241, you're all set. If they ever claim bad DEF just ask to watch them pull a sample and test it in front of you. Make sure you see the sample as its pulled. Ive yet to see a credible report of bad DEF out of a sealed container.

Not really sure just how much power we consumers really have. If a dealership says bad def-no coverage for you- how does one fight that? Call Chrysler? They will most likely stand behind the dealers decision. Hire an attorney and spend big dollars and many months in court?
Start with making them prove their case and have them follow the bolded above. The onus is on them to prove it and they try and intimidate because most people cave.

The user manual is very clear, the DEF must just meet the ISO standard which the walmart brand does. They cannot deny a warranty claim for not using their def. Nor can they deny you based on some theory of expired def. If def actually expired it would have an expiration date on the bottle not a cryptic date code. Some might try, but I would escalate if necessary to FCA. If def goes bad, it would also go bad in the def tank on the truck, ask them what the process is for an owner to drain old def to replace it with fresh def. If def goes bad, surely they would have incorporated a simple way to drain the tank. Def starts to lose its potency slowly after a certain period, but it does not expire on a certain date and become bad.

We have a fleet of new forklifts with Cummins motors.
We go thru BlueDef by the pallet load and have only had a few problems related with the Def system.
Like all new diesel vehicles they are so complex it seems there is always some kind of issue or another but BlueDef has not been one of them for us. We have had Def Sensor failures and pump issues but once fixed Blue Def goes back in and machine goes back to work.

All this talk in what seems to be hundreds of posts about denying warranty for this that or whatever just remember this magnusen/moss act the dealer has to prove whatever you did caused the said problem/failure if they tell you any different that craps against the law

Actually, the portion of the magnusun moss warranty act that would apply to this discussion, is the part saying, a certain brand of part to maintain warranty cannot be required, unless that specific brand of product required is provided for free to the customer.

So if ram wants to require a specific brand of DEF to maintain warranty, it will have to be provided for free to the customer.

If the concern is that high, keep the Mopar bottle and fill it with whatever DEF you like...............and keep a bucket of sand right next to it for the dealer that denies a warranty claim with a sign that says fists go here, please proceed to pound to manufacturers specifications! :rof

hey Bob maybe I didn't pick the best time to throw the magnuson/moss act out there lol but it's just the constant talk in so many threads about voiding warranty that just gets to me. We have a lot more power as consumers than some people thing

I recommend non from a jug, mine will never ever see or use DEF from a jug.

With the available truck stops every 100 miles or less I use fresh DEF from their pumps and at a lower price. With the amount of DEF those guys go through its a hell of a lot fresher than stored on a shelf jug DEF at your local store. If the truck stop sold crappy DEF they would be out of business immediately from the law suits for repairs and truckers loss of income. That and truckers avoiding that truck stop. They simply can not afford to sell bad DEF.

I've used Peak Blue DEF in the 2.5 gallon boxes since day one. 3 years and 60k miles later and no issues related to it. I put in a box when it shows around 1/2 tank or so, which is normally around 5k miles (non-towing). Fills it right back up. I just don't go through it fast enough to worry about shopping around for the best price. But... buying the Mopar brand at those prices is just insane....
