Im running 35/12.5/15 all terrains and they look really small
With a 9" lift
Id like to move up to 38" maybe 37's
38/13.5/15 m/ts
I know that even running 35's on stock gears and axles
Isnt to good
But id like a solid set up for when i upgrade to bigger tires
I hear 4.56 and 4.88 would be ideal but i have stock axles and wont be upgrading them for atleast a year or two
By the way i have a 1500 ram with a full cummins an tranny swap
I want gears where i wont loose speed or torque
Its a daily driver plus i take it offroading/mudbogs atleast once or twice every two weeks
Does anyone know the ideal set up for 38/13.5/15 on stock axles
Can anyone suggest a good company for gears? An what type?
Thanks
Thanks

In your sig you have 3500 axles, correct? That would be a dana 60 and dana 80. I have 4.10s in m 95 with 37s and a 5spd. Final drive on the 5spd is lower than the auto, so comparable gearing for the auto would be 4.56s. I like my gears as they are, 2000rpm at 65, I don't drive much faster than that. I have about 5000 miles on my gears, and they're fine. I am running yukon gears in the rear and motives up front. No complaints. I did have them professionally installed to get the setup right the first time, labor was $400 per axle. I had a 99 2500 with 37s, auto and 4.56s and the gearing was slightly lower than mine IIRC. Make sure you get the correct gears for the 3.55 and lower carrier. The ring gear is different for the 3.55 and 4.10 carriers. Yukon makes the gears you'll need at least in 4.10, not sure about 4.56. If you could find some 4.30s that would be perfect. Hope this helps

4:10 with 37" is about the same ratio as stock tires with 3:55. 38's I would go a 4:30 or even a 4:56. Anything higher than 4:10 on the stock carrier you'll have to go to a thick gear set or change the carrier and go to a regular set higher than 4:10's

There's a couple of gear calculator's floating around on a few threads just do a search and you'll find them. You'll be able to change gear ratio, tire size, final drive and even give you spedo gear. Here's one from pitbull :: PIT BULL TIRES :: Axle Ratio/Tire Size Calulator 1.1

Also consider a 38" tire doesn't mesure 38". They differ from maker to maker. My 37" procomp X A/T actually mesure 36.6".

I have a Question too... if I have stock gears, with a tuner and 6" lift and am getting 37's soon. Will I absolutely need different gears or can I get away with stock ones?

You can get away with stock gears, but I wouldn't tow heavy with it and it'll hurt your fuel milage, well worse than if you had proper gearing. Transmission might try to hunt for gears if you got an auto. I see lots of guys around here that drive superdutys and rams with big tires with stock gears. Ive heard a few complain about not having any power down low. Not sure about speedo calibration, I think your tuner might be able to change that for ya but I don't have any experiance with the third gens.
