Water Separator Drain Interval

Do you guys drain the water separators between filter changes? I came from a 6.7 Ford where there was a monthly drain listed in the maintenance schedule. I don’t see such a thing on my new Ram. Just want to see what the consensus is? BTW I never found a drop of water in the fuel I drained on that truck.

Drain it when the WIF light comes on. I’ve never done it.

That’s what I like to hear. I know on the Fords I was really paranoid about grenading a fuel pump I drained the separator at least every 3rd tank. Ford didn’t have a good filtration system IMO. I’m not going to worry about my new Ram.

You're probably right, 8-10k is too soon, I changed mine out at 12k and front filter looked new & clean. I'm not doing it until 15k from now on.

On my 14 I started out draining after every fill up, never noticed any water in either. Then I started doing it every few months same result. Now I drain when I change filters every 15k miles and still dont see any water in the samples I draw off. Bright and clear every time.

Thats just me though, others may do it differently. If the WIF light is working it should let you know of any issue theoretically.

A local shop does my oil and FF changes, and he cuts my frame mounted filter open every third change or so to see how clean they are.. they always look nearly new. I am now going 20k on my fuel filters, and even though they look new I don't think ill push it out farther than that. He does say that he gets trucks in the shop that have filthy filter elements, and the owners claim they change them on schedule, so who knows.. maybe my stations just have good filtration and sell enough diesel to keep it fresh.

It's all about the fuel you get. I got some bad fuel somewhere in Oklahoma a few months ago and ruined all 6 injectors. Been driving diesels 20 years and never lost an injector to bad fuel but it happens. I always buy at truck stops but occasionally have to buy somewhere in the middle of nowhere and that can be a crap shoot. Never a sign until the motor starting surging at idle. Changed the filters several times getting back to NC and ran several bottles of Diesel Kleen but it was too late.

Was this in your 2014?

If so, the bad fuel made it through filters and pump and still managed to screw up injectors?

That stinks. Kinda scary to think about. That’s the only good thing about living in a fairly high populated area, pretty low chance of that.

Yep the 2014. Certainly a freak thing I would think but goes to show it can happen. I went back with an Air Dog system to have easy access for spin on filter changes and a sensor post filter on the AD unit so I can watch fuel line pressure after the filters. From now on any drop of 2psi or more and I'll be switching filters. In the case of good fuel I'll get longer change intervals, but in the unlikely event I get horrible fuel again I'll see the pressure drop and know to change them now.

Did you file a claim with the fuel retailer?

Couldn't be sure exactly where it came from. I was on a drive straight through excursion from Tx to NC. It only showed at idle initially and I missed it at the fill up before I started getting real on road issues. Call me dumb but I don't keep receipts and fuel records I just fill up and drive. I am sure it came from a mom and pop retailer in Oklahoma but no way to prove that.

I would think that the engine wouldn't even run on fuel bad enough to ruin all injectors. That sucks.

That’s where I came from. Lots of horror stories. Ford denied almost all warranty claims. Some folks insurance picked up the bill but some were left high and dry. I was deleted and so paranoid about trashing a $10k fuel system I eventually sold the truck.

Fast forward 2 years and I needed a new truck so after hours upon hours of reading and talking to locals I decided to go with a Ram this time. So far I’m happy. This thing gets crazy good fuel mileage.
