Using two front crank seals

This will be my third time replacing the front crank seal on my ‘97 12 valve. The first time I replaced it 3/4 years ago I had zero leaks. I pulled the timing cover to install a PDD adjustable timing gear. Well after getting it all back together the front crank seal was leaking. I bought another new Mahle kit and used the included repair sleeve and it leaked right away! This time I bought felpro parts. I’m going to try two seals after removing the repair sleeve. Do you just press the seal into the back of the cover until it is flush with the front, then press the second on until it’s touching? I’m confused about how to install two seals. Thanks.

Yes. I install them from the back of the cover so the first one goes in with the normal depth then the second one is installed and pressed in until the front of first one is flush with the front of the cover. Remember to install them clean and dry on a clean and dry crankshaft. Use the normal plastic install sleeve placed inside the seals with the wide part to the rear. Press the cover on evenly. It takes a bit of effort. Removing the plastic sleeve can be a struggle too.

Thanks GAmes I was hoping someone, like yourself, would chime in. I really appreciate it!

I am glad I am not the only one doing this... Today I did something stupid and used the old seal without realizing it (it was still in good shape), I torqued the whole gear cover with some shellac, few hrs later realized the new seal was sitting on my work bench...
All I did was punch it a little bit from the front until it flatted against the cover. Hopefully this will help me as a "better way" to avoid a leak in the future.
If yours still holds let me know.

It started leaking but I can't tell you what the mileage was exactly. More than 100k anyway.

Mine is a lot better with two seals. I might still get a drip or two but I can live with it. It was great advice. Thanks again.

I'm guessing that with two seals both are contacting the crank in different places than original. I'm leery of trying the repair sleeve. Is it possible to install two seals in a first generation engine? I searched old threads but didn't see anything in the first gen powertrain section.

As far as I know the crankshaft dimensions are the same and probably the cover's design. If they both won't fit you have a spare.

I don't use anything but the paper gasket. No need for Permatex or RTV.
