Use of Engine Brake during cold start/ High Idle

Can someone explain what the benefit is using the EB during a cold start/ when the truck is at high idle right after starting during cold temps..

It keeps some exhaust heat from escaping which helps warm up the engine a bit quicker.

I start mine, turn on the exhaust brake and then engage fast idle. In the winter, it helps with warmup. In the summer time, fast idle increases the A/C system efficiency.

It helps warm up the engine, but not because of keeping exhaust heat. It blocks the exhaust partially which puts a load on the engine which causes
it to consume more fuel which heats it up faster.

Side effect: it also commands the EGR to 0% during EB usage, so less soot
during that period.

I know its not exactly cold yet.. but how do you switch on high idle. Yeah i know stupid question.. havent had the truck long.

It has to be enabled with a StarScan on the '09 and older trucks. To turn it on, push the cruise on/off switch on, and then push the set button. To raise or lower the RPM, use the resume/accel and decel buttons.

Starscan? Is this a tuner or system monitor like the ScanGuageII that I run?

Running at high idle just seems wrong. With the internal combustion engine, it creates additional wear on parts due to the oil not lubricating efficiently until up to temp. Can someone tell me how a diesel engine differs, allowing it to lub well with thick oil? How exactly does the engine brake work in warming up the engine? Is it simply making more friction because it's loading up the pistons and bearings? Again, this seems counter intuitive to a nice slow easy warm up until everything is up to temp.

I don't know about everyone else, but after I put a 4" tbe with no muffler the engine break is pretty loud and obnoxious, espesially at warm up idle. It doesn't bother me as much under a load but it sounds like a super hair dryer on crack at idle, not sure if you can do anything about it other than adding a muffler... Sorry to change the subject, but the extra exhaust heat and slight load just aids the engine during warmup.

You ought to hear it with a 5" stainless and no muffler. Sounds like a F-14A on burner waiting to be launched off the deck :rof:rof Neighbor two houses down asked me WTF? when he heard it 'light off' at 10p one night.

They will tell you that it is a safety issue and that they want to sell you a 300-400 dollar wiring harness that will only allow the high idle to work when the truck is in neutral.

My local dealer didn't know that it could be done until I did a little reaserch on this site and I found all the answers I needed. You have to love this forum.

After I told them how to do it they were pretty happy that it was that simple. I wouldn't put it past them to just ground the wire like I did and tell folks that they needed the wiring harness.

Took me a while to get used to it, but definitely turns heads

Truck warms up quicker with it in. And, print those instructions out from Flopster's site. I have a 68. Local dealer said it couldn't be enabled on an Auto. While in Iraq, i directed wife to Flopster's site to print those, and she took that and the truck to another dealer to have it done in 2 minutes, no charge. Local dealer still wouldn't do it with printed instructions :banghead:

If you look close you will see the green wire with an orange stripe. I removed the two bolts that held the connector on to obtain better access to the wire. I used a small compression lug and placed it under the bolt when I put it back together.

Sorry for the poor images my phone does not take the best ones. Hope this helps.

I am trying to figure out if there is a certain temperature that the exhaust brake will come on with high idle enabled. I know the switch has to be turned on.
