Any one find an easy way to turn the engine over for doing the valve lash? I dont wanna have to crank the engine over and over till i get it at tdc.

When we just did my stepson's, I just laid under the truck and used a pry bar on the the fly wheel while he watched the marks on the balancer. Skeeter

barring tool is the easiest way, it goes in a hole on the passenger side below the turbo on the transmission adapter plate, there is a cover over the hole. I think i paid $35 for the one i got. What i do is put it on TDC then i painted an orange line at BDC so i can see it from under the truck.

I just looked on ebay for the tool 2005DFS mentioned.....see OTC Cummins Engine Barring Tool 7471A | eBay

I'm going to have to get one of those! I'm sure that would be easier than the pry bar through the trans bottom bell housing opening. I like that paint idea too....:cbadge2:

Ummmmmmmmm...I think I just put a breaker bar on the dampener bolts. Or the alternator. Sorry, can't remember.

I pull the plastic cover for the injector pump bolt and turn it there , super easy and can do it all with out moving. Just make sure you go clockwise

That worked for the first two turns. Then the next few turns nothing in the valve train moved. So i figured i better stop.

By the time u install the barring tool I'm half way done with valve adjustment

I need it done by Monday since I'm getting efi live then. So i don't have time for the barring tool, other wise I would have ordered one of those. I'll remove the plastic cover on my alternator and try that.

Well my alternator doesn't have a bolt in it. There is a hole with what looks like spider gears around out. Put my finger in there and don't feel a bolt head

Check dampener and use one of those bolts. Nice and slow is the deal.

What is the dampener?

The injector pump bolt will turn the whole motor no matter what , its all gear driven . You were turning it like you would be tightening the nut right?

#17 ·
Well i think i earned the moron of the week award. Forgot to take the truck outta gear

#16 ·
Yes, i was going clockwise. I don't know if the nut or bolt (which ever it is) was just tightening or if something else was going on since nothing in the valve train moved for a few turns

I use a 15mm socket and use a balancer bolt. But when I redo the motor I'll be putting fleece's crank tool.

I just laid under truck and grabbed the dampener and turned it by hand, well it took both hands. But I was able to watch the mark as I did it pretty easy.

I used the nut on the timing belt behind the injection pump. It worked really good

Behind your injection pump is a round black plastic cover. You remove that with a 3/8 ratchet and then behind that cover is a big nut, I think i used 1 1/8" socket. You turn that nut clockwise and it turns you're engine over.

I don't follow what you are saying. the first quote is what I did, the second quote is exactly how to do it.

#28 ·
Oh haha. Well the timing gear, chain, rubber band, flux capacitor. Whatever happens to be in there, i don't know. But that's the thingy i used.
