I am brand new to the diesel world. As a matter of fact I have not even picked up my new 08 Quad cab 4X4 yet. I was wondering if there was a port on the 6 speed automatic that would accept the 1/8 inch temperature probe without having the pan drilled and having a bung welded in like I had to do with my 04 Hemi?

There is another site that has this neat little thing (transcender) that attaches to the hot line of your tranny, or you can tap into the line and run a gauge.

I actually made a clamp that sandwiches my probe around the tranny hot line. It is made of aluminum for fast conductivity. You can buy a very simmilar item form many stores.

Vulcanperformance.com carries such an item.

I don't believe that part will fit the 68rfe as it uses push connectors. DM does have a T-tap compression fitting that will fit the 68rfe cooler lines.

In regards to the clamp on sensors - I recommend keeping them away from the CAT on the downpipe near where the line exit the trans as it can affect the reading, I also think that it helps to insulate the clamp on units to prevent ambient air flow from having a cooling effect on the sensor.

Thank you all for your input, it is very much appreciated. I have just arranged a pick up time for my 08 quad cab 4x4 slt for this weekend. I am like a kid waiting for Christmas morning. I have been a diesel addict ever since I took that first test drive.

Good explanation Slagburn, I agree with everything you stated. Swagelok fittings can be bought in every major city in USA/ Canada, cost of this fitting in 316SS is about $24.00(Canadian)P#SS-400-3TTF. 1/4" tube tee with a 1/8" female NPT branch.Google Swagelok and find your nearest retailer. Parker also makes this fitting as well in carbon steel/ stainless steel and brass.

I bought the Swagelok fitting and installed it myself. The tubing cutter can be bought at any hardware store for less than $20 and the fitting is less than $30 in the SS version. See link for the part I used. Then all you need is a reducing bushing from 1/4" to 1/8". Just make sure not to overtighten the fitting. About 2 turns after hand tight is all that's needed.

It's the same one DM sales. Also make sure to use two wrenches when removing the hotline from the tranny otherwise you can easily twist the line.
