Ok so next week I will starting to pull the trans to swap for a fire punk stage 1... I've never pulled a transmission so I need some tips and advice..

So its my understanding its drain the trans fluid and transfer case fluid, rear drive shaft, front drive shaft, transfer case brace, transfer case, transmission brace, unplug wires and fluid lines, pull transmission.... Am I close? Also I will watch a few youtube videos but I'm having a hard time finding one for a pick up like mine but I figure its going to be the same idea as other trucks..

Tricky part is going to be all this will most likely take place in my yard or gravel drive way... I haven't done any measuring yet but I've been looking at the JEGS trans jack, it has a 23 in lift but I might be able to take air out of the tires (32s) to help lower the truck. Its 160$ which doesn't seem bad?

Side question, how heavy is the transfer case? Can two people lower it? And do I need any crazy tools or pullers to do this job?

Thank you!

I've had mine out twice with the cheapest Harbor Freight trans jack. It is a little tough to line up without the adjustments a real jack has but it works. Unbolt the TC through the covered access hole in the bell housing. You can have a buddy bar the engine over with the alternator pulley one at a time. No special tools or pullers needed, but I did use about 18" of extensions to reach the top trans bolts. I'm told the transfer is 100lbs. 2 guys can handle it, but I took mine off first using the same jack. Toughest part will be laying on the gravel.

The converter will stay in the trans so be sure not to tip the front end down or it will fall out. It will have 6 bolts.

Hope you have an easy way to get the crossmember out and in. No reason to drain the tcase. You will need a short 14mm or 13mm wrench to the the nuts off. I have removed and installed a tcases by myself. They are not that bad. Roll the engine over using the flex plate. Don't screw around with the alternator nonsense. To give you some perspective....it takes me about an hour by myself to pull a trans from one of these.

I have done countless truck trans R&Rs by myself. I usually pull the trans and transfer case out of my GMC one-ton in a single unit, with nothing but a couple floor jacks and some ratchet straps, but pulling the T-case separately is a good idea. I ratchet the trans tightly onto the jack. I also use ratchet straps over the frame going under the trans so it doesn't fall on me if I screw up somehow. Ratchet straps work great to help with the install, but most of them just dump when you release them so I just use them as a safety during removal.

I second the idea of laying down plywood. You need the jack to be able to move, and in gravel it really won't want to. When you're yanking and shoving is when things go wrong.
Also, I've done plenty of wrenching in gravel and it's an absolute guarantee you'll drop stuff into the gravel never to be seen again.

I used a scissor jack and a 4x4 post to spread the frame to get the crossmember out. SKETCHY but worked! Transmission itself ways around 500 lbs I believe you will need 2 people for it, but transfer case is easy enough with 1 person.

I did not look up the weight specs for it before posting it was just a rough idea with the TC still in the trans. Point was he would need some help or a good trans jack and stable foundation.

Many feel you need to spread the frame to get it out. Not needed if done correctly but it has been so long I can't remember exactly how. I think you knock it up and back and then comes out pretty easy. I have done it both ways and would not spread the frame again. Not that tough without pushing frame apart.

Crossmember is tapered which is why it's EASIER to just spread the frame a bit, like 1/2-3/4in spread. Otherwise get a good hammer and have fun.

^^^^^^ That's it right there. Look at it and you'll see. No need for big hammers, porta powers and the like.

yes transfer case is out, i had to leave town for work, but i head back home tonight so I'm hoping to get the rest out before work the next two days.... i beat on the crossmember for like 30 mins with a hammer ahah i had to put ear pro in after the first 5 mins.

thanks for all the help and advise everyone.
