Ive been tossing this around alot lately. I really want a 3rd gen but id like to keep my 01. I cant really afford a new truck at the moment. The 01 has its boo boos like any 11 year old truck, after seeing that the pan gasket's leaking and the fact of having to raise/pull the engine to replace it. I got the idea of doing a re-power. Id basically do an engine reseal at the point of pulling the engine to replace the pan gasket. Well I want to see your opinions on a re-power.

Swap my 103k mile 24v with a low mile 6.7 common rail.
47RE to a NV or G56

the goodies for the 6.7
EGR/DPF deletes
100hp over sticks
120% CP3 or dual CP's
T4 foot 2nd gen manifold
S475
and EFI live with an economy, mild, quick, and a "Nasty Gram" tune( thats what a buddy calls his in his Dmax.... it isnt slow by any means)

South bend clutch to hold the power

Body wise and interior will stay the same besides the normal manual swap. cup holders, dash pocket, etc. Im also going to toss on a nice bradford to replace the box.

5" exhaust to top it off.

at this point, id keep the truck for life.

So....whatchya guys think?

here's what it looks like currently

Ok, if no VGT, then twins? I want to see this thing make so much power, and hmm, i thought a 62 would be good, must be the 6.7's pure volume of air it pulls that makes it spool bigger turbos

Maybe I should consider this swap also, theres a 98 5 speed ram and a 03 6 speed ram where I live with bad engines but a good body and are going for dirt cheap. Would the 03 be easier to wire up you think because its allready CR? Living in a house with 2 mostly stock VP trucks makes me sad.

BTW just wondering, whats stronger internally, a NV5600 or G56? I know the clutch is the main weak point but what after that?

trans- i dont know. The 5.9 swap is easy because Painless wiring makes a complete stand alone harness for an 03-05 manual CR swap. No twins, i like simple (besides the electronics part).

Just off the record to everyone, i will never, ever, hang a p pump on an engine that didnt come with one. IMHO electronics is extremely better for low- no smoke power and for keeping road manners.

is it a stick or auto? i know cummins sells wiring harnesses for 5.9 CR's for stand alone gen sets and irrigation pumps, i dont know if they have these for the 6.7 or if a EFI would even work with it
the trucks an auto but ill be swapping it to a stick with the swap. I like the auto, especially after a 10 hour shift at work but ill tow like a mad man with this truck. sleds, 4 wheelers, camper, etc. If i get a 6.7 out of a truck that had a stick, i believe EFI would work without a problem. If not, theres always a Zeus ECM from Destroked thats an option but thats a very.....very spendy option

i've always said i'd love to take my 4th gen and put a 24v from an 01 or 02 in it. of course, i'll never do it. IMHO, that's my ideal combination.
I got a nice non 53 blocked 24v with 103k miles on it to trade..... ill even replace the front, rear mains, and pan gasket. lol

Just some part suggestions, a new air intake heater, 2nd gen exhaust manifold, nice turbo like a silver 64, or a HE 451 VGT :drool2: EFI live tuning.
No VGT's. Im a tech at Kenworth and we change out VGT's on ISX cummins' like they're toilet paper because they get carbon'd up and stick or internally fail. I believe with a 64 it might be a tad small for the fuel amount. Ive heard that the S475's which are 75mm/1.00 a.r with a T4 foot (I believe thats the size) are good big singles that spool great. And yes, i'd go straight with EFI live. no smarties, no edge products. Ill go straight to the best. A friend of mine gets 29.3 mpg avg at 70 mph in his 05 Dmax with his economy tune. That IS hand calculated. lifted 6" on 35's, only other mods are a 4" with muffler and some sort of intake. It also isnt slow on the economy tune either. Its a very quick Max. Its amazing and id like to get that with this 6.7 or as close as possible. id be happy with 23 mpg or the same as i get now with the 24v (20 avg). 2nd gen manifold is a MUST. especially after hearing a few 5.9 CR's with them and 2 6.7's. they sound sooooo much better. I hate a straight piped CR with a rear dump manifold.

jtheado- ill have to look and see what II has for that 71mm.

In other news, i started looking for possible wiring harness's if i can not buy a wrecked truck. so far painless only makes one to swap in an 03-05 CR.

no P pumps, all electronic is how its going. its reliable, clean, big HP. reliable if the fuel is filtered right or injectors will fail like in most CR's. like i said guys, its the plan for it. it'll occur over time. the hard part is bitting the bullet and buying a 6.7 complete engine. Id rather wait and buy a wrecked truck to have all the parts and electronics. 8.3L's dont make any more power than a 5.9. torque yes but there are fewer go fast parts for the C's plus they are quite larger in size.

00dodgecummins- i dont think she'll be for sale when this happens.

thanks for the opinion guys. you've swung me to do the swap. keep in mind, it will be a long process. but i hope the end result is worth the time.

a 6.7 is a common rail. Why not a 5.9? Theres no replacement for displacement :)

no flares, i hate flares and trim. also, i dont cover up issues. i fix them lol

That's going to be a job.. Aren't the 6.7's a little longer than the 5.9's? You'll have quite a bit of rewiring as well..

Instead of hitting the performance parts for the 6.7, why wouldn't you want to fix the paint? It looks great except for the rear fender well, and maybe other spots that can't be seen in a photo... But maybe that's just me. :confused013:
the only cancer is that fender well. i have a patch panel and paint for it. the rest of the paint is in great shape. Dang wheel well trim from the previous owner caused that. good thing we dont have bad cancer issues in MT or the bed would be dust by now. I i would repair the box also but i think a flatbed would look nasty on it, even being a shorty.
The wiring and work doesnt scare me. Im a technician at Kenworth so I've had alot worse nightmares. As being physical size, no i dont believe so. just internal size is bigger.
