so whats the deal with this smog crap for diesels comming in 2010?

maybe someone can fill me in on this., i tried to do some searchin, but im not 100% today

from what im understanding, the older rigs ( such as my 1993) wont be effected?

it weighs 10100 lbs....

Not as of yet, but in 2012 supposedly all diesels dating back to the late 70's will be subjected to some form of testing. According to my buddy who does smogs all the 1st gens have to pass is a smoke test and a sulfur content test. So basically he said just turn the pump down to stock specs and we should pass no problem. We never had any emission controls on our trucks to begin with, so not much else to test.

shweeeet.....!.......by then ill be moved out of the kommunist state of kalifukya anyway...LOL.......im lookin to buy a big hunting lodge property in oregon....(im a licensed outfitter....)
my 93 is all bone stock anyway. i was gonna turn it up, but pulled my 5th wheel around and you cant even tell its back there......i just wish mine smoked more. i cant even hardly get any black out of it when i first start the sucker!...i MAY go to some bigger injectors in the future but wit the mileage this thing gets, id have to think real hard about that

Where did you find it? I always browse craigslist, and I never saw it listed in CA.

#8 ·
actually, i didnt get it on craigslist, i found it online at a place called redding auto and truck. they said it sat on their lot for months. then a guy called them from Nebraska and wanted to buy it, and fly out here and pick it up and drive it home, but they told him first come, first serve. i bought it, and then i got the oprotunity to talk to the guy in Nebraska on the phone. he was pissed.....lol!

are you in norcal?.....im in the burney ca area

As of right now its only 1998 and newer trucks, but they are trying to pull the older models in as well. Not aware of any articles on this yet, as they will probably wait to see how the current laws go first. Bringing the older model diesels in is stupid in my opinion since they never had any pollution controls in the first place. I don't know how they are planning on what to say is acceptable and what is not. My friend said its up to the smog tech's discretion as to whether the amount of smoke out the tailpipe is acceptable. Its just another way for California to make more money since they're broke right now. Here is a link to the current diesel smog requirements, if you are interested.

well they dont smog pre 73 gas vehicles... but carb hates diesel. they've been trying to ban them forever. They've already tacked on steep weight fees, lets throw a little more on... :bonk:

that link is truncated... but i assume its the inspection procedure. ive read v3 and the diesel stuff for the 98+ is already at the smog tech's discretion to determine the amount of smoke on a snap test. perhaps the state will go bankrupt and all the carb people will lose their jobs and spare us this bs... :sb:

While that would be detrimental to a lot of people, specifically anyone with state bonds, I dont think we are far from it. What other option does CA have??

The best part is that the 98 12 valves have to be smogged. They arent the cleanest of the bunch . . .

Uh, ya we can blame CARB. Look at the mileage the new pickups get versus the old ones. And is the sky really brown because of the emissions from our trucks? Or is it from shipping batteries all over the world for prius's? Or is it just something Al Gore has brainwashed you into thinking its from all us blood sucking truck driving hill billies that are just trying to make a living?????

CA Sucks!

Don't kid yourelf......ITS ALL ABOUT THE MONEY IN THIS STATE!......We hate it here thats why we are moving from here. Don't get me started....theres unreal FA laws, code enforcement because you have too many cars (and we are on 10 acres 15 miles from town), communication issues at McDonalds and Burger King....etc, property taxes and taxes on the taxes.....Not to mention the price of diesel crowding $3.50 a gallon.....and I have not even mentioned our facist goverment here....welcome to unamerica.....BY THE WAY MY RANCH IS FOR SALE! Oh come on John Wayne use to hang out here! No kidding really.....its on the imagrint trail.......We might even carry the paper...PLEASE let me outa here!!!! LOL:banghead:

jamo90 - I am in so cal right now full time, went to school in Long Beach and now work in Hawthorne full time. Since I got here I have never had an issue with a cop or chp for the diesel part of my truck. I have had a few window tint tickets but those are easy to sign off. Are they city cops or chp that give you issues?

my girlfriends uncle is high up in the DMV, he stated, 98 and above has to pass a smog test for transfer of title ONLY,

2008+ vehicles will have to pass a smog test, due to they have emission equipment on them...

for the 98 and newer you must have all required STOCK equipment on the vehicle to be able to register in a different name...

97 and below are exempt from this... 75 and older gas are exempt, but he said theres probably going to be a change soon due to the economy over here...

imo, its so bad over here they are trying to tax people on well water... tax our own wells??? get the f out of my country...

oh yeah, and for everybody saying the sky is brown and cali has the worst air blah blah blah, its on a REALLY active volcanic area, san andreas fault?? LA county has had the worst quality air since recorded history... its a known fact... read this article... then read it again and realize how freaking retarded california people really are...

as in read the last statement, then read the title... then read the last statement then read the title... are they really that stupid???

California cars 99% cleaner than in 1960s, but smog levels still high, study says | Technology | Los Angeles Times

Are you saying that volcanoes in California cause our bad air quality? :rof :hehe:

Today's cars that emit less much emissions per gallon of fuel burned also spend more time running, burn more fuel and there are many more of them. But the pollution controls have been effective; "its a known fact" that our air quality today is better than it was before controls were implemented.

Not sure what all the hysterics are about insofar as smogging a 1st gen is concerned. I need to have my truck smogged every year in NV. It passed just fine.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that one... California was preceded by around a dozen states in requiring Diesels to be smogged, and still smogs less Diesels than other states in a less-stringent test. People that move to Nevada, Arizona or Utah trying to get away from Commifornia's smog tests are in for an unpleasant surprise.

Your well doesn't tap in to the same aquifer that everybody else's does? Are you familiar with the term tragedy of the commons?

If you're whining because you can't "roll coal" and paint an entire intersection black, well, cry me a f**king river and grow up. Think about the impact on air quality if every single vehicle on the road was a bombed out diesel pouring black smoke into the air. Then, ask yourself why it's ok for you to do it, but not the collective 30 million people in your state.

It makes sense to try to take steps to get rid of toxic skies. Take a look at Linfen, China, or any number of Chinese cities. It's absolutely repulsive.

It's refreshing to see that there's so many other people appalled by those that seem to take some kind of pride in how much filth they can put into the air that we breath. What's next for them? Leave the drain plugs loose to see how big an oil slick you can make?

I like how you just lurked around until somebody else defended your point before jumping in and being self-righteous. Good gig.

Could it be some of the top soil blowing around from the delta breeze/Santa Anna winds? Think about it.....our family has been farming there ince the 30s....they call it the 2nd dust bowl....and all CA smog regulations has not improved the air quality.....
Smog regulations HAVE improved air quality. Look, I have graphs!
http://www.epa.gov/region9/air/trends/index.html

NO2: (Major component of NOx.)
Image

CO: (Diesels don't make CO.)
Image

PM2.5: (The lack of drop in this graph is largely why DPF's were mandated.)
Image

PM10: (I don't know what the Owens and Imperial Valley increases are. Development?)
Image

O3:

What else explains how more people driving more cars for more time burning more gas causes a drop in atmospheric pollution levels?

No....its upon transfer (unless it had been smogged within 90 days) and every other year regardless whether you have driven it or not. And n the brown sky note.....its been brown through the San Juaqin valley since the 50s. Could it be some of the top soil blowing around from the delta breeze/Santa Anna winds? Think about it.....our family has been farming there ince the 30s....they call it the 2nd dust bowl....and all CA smog regulations has not improved the air quality......just created more revenue and more goverment jobs and drive through smog shops.....back to ITS ALL ABOUT THE DOLLAR!

im not stating that the smog has nothing to do with cars, im stating that hundreds of years ago it was a brown sky in the LA area... i did a huge report in college about the LA county air quality..
