Like to start a thread only for the '03-'07 5.9L Smarty Jr to see what setting folks are using to get the best mileage.

Recent 1350 mile trip with an auto tranny, 285x70x17 tires, speeds 65-70, through mountains, OAT 35F average, software version 5.10B.

SW2 - POD 84 - TQ4 - TM3

Towing 7000lb trailer hand calculated 10.2 mpg T/H ON
Return empty hand calculated 18.75 mpg T/H OFF

Likes about smarty jr - smooth shifting, lower egt

I would like to see what others settings folks are using for the 03-07 Smarty Jr.

another tank full

I set Smarty Jr to SW2, POD-90, TM-4, TQ-4. 70% city driving with stop lights. 30% open road and highway. Hand calculated at 16.9 MPG.
Truck shifted smoothly but did not think the engine ran as smooth as it should.

Filled up again and will give results later with a different setting.

Truck ran smoothly and shifted fine. Will try another setting with fill up.

SW 3, POD at 99, Timing at default, TM at Default. Two different tanks, one 19.2 and one 19.8. Two lane highway mostly. The majority of the time is short, city diving with a little highway thrown in. Most of the time its floating around the low 18's.

SW2, POD-95, TM2,TQ3. 50% Open roads 50% City Driving. 17.65 MPG hand calculated. On this setting my EGT's ran about 50 degrees hotter and tranny shifted a little harder.

Those are terrible numbers. I have the older edge juice w/att and i'me getting 18+ on the highway. I am thinking about getting a smarty jr but if that's all you get...

I was also told to get the 5.11b software for it.

Yep.. still trying to find the best Smarty Jr settings for fuel economy. Of course driving styles, tire pressure, rear gears, and many other factors makes every truck different but I want it all.... lowest EGT, smoothest shifting, AND fuel economy.

The Smarty Jr has really smoothed out my truck and I am happy I bought it. I'll keep dickin with it to find what I'm happy with. I am running the 5.11B software now.

Glad you are seeing good fuel economy with the edge.

I was under the impression that there are only three settings on the smarty jr. 40,70, and 100 hp. Bob Wagner told me to put it on 100 and leave it. I guess whatever works. I'm like you, I want the best mpg's, egt's and good shifting. I didn't know that smarty messed with shifting either. I hate the stock shift points. The edge doesn't mess with that....

#12 ·
Your right.. the Smarty Jr only has the 3 levels... I tried the other levels and find that the 70hp or SW2 works best with my truck. I am still worried about trashin my tranny going too high a power level or using a more powerful torque setting although Bob and alot of others say "no problem"...

The shift points don't change with the the Smarty Jr but with just the OEM stock program my truck shifted hard in the higher gears and now it is very smooth I bought the truck with 50,000 miles and am trying to baby it.

I looked at the Edge also and it was a toss up as which one to get. Glad you like it.

SW 3, timing and torque default stock tires mixed driving but mostly country highways 20.5 mpg. Changed tires to 305 - 65 - 17 procomps and lost 1.5 mpg's. Started using A/C recently and lost some more mpg's tried the SW 1 and lost more. Now back to SW 3 timing 2 and tm 4 we'll see what this nets...

Gee wiz, You should be kicking a** with a 6 speed. I know country highways are usually 55mph zones and most people don't crack 60 so that isn't too hot. This is getting worrysome. Maybe I had false hopes of finding 23 + mpg. It sure would be killer to be able to pull a house down and still get as good as a minivan :)

I won't outright call anyone a liar. But i have never owned a diesel truck that did any better then my Dodge Cummins when it comes to mileage. My best ever was 21.5. My best ever in either of my Fords was 19.0.

Well You're not going to believe this. I have been through an edge juice w/ attitude, Afe stage II plus bladerunner intake and am now running the smarty Jr., a CFM+ and a stock air box with the updated factory filter which is over twice as thick as my original. Today I went to have my carli ball joints installed and pulled off...drumroll please...23.6 mpg on the meter. UNBELIEVABLE! I am in shock. This is driving 58mph on rolling hills. I have the smarty set at default level two. I think POD on the default is 99.

I was getting 18 with the CFM only. The difference is so amazing that I am worried something will go wrong. I can tell the timing is advanced and if I lay into the throttle she'll pour some smoke. Other than that it smokes a bit more under normal driving. I am so blown away by the difference.

So your saying you got 23.6 with the overhead ? Not actually calculated ?

Just wondering...

Just turned 61,000 miles on my '06 and at my last fillup with 50/50 highway and city I got 20.55 mpg hand calculated. Settings were SW2, TQ4, TM2, POD99. I am going to stay with this setting for a while

My mileage has been creeping up and hope, like others have mentioned, that 60,000 miles on the cummins is a point where mileage normally gets better.

Is TQ4, TM2 the default settings for the JR? It's been raining like crazy here lately and I see the mileage is fickle but still much better then before.

I think that is only default for software version 5.08 on the Jr. If you have any other version the TQ2 and TM2 is the default. I think the Jr is up to 5.11C now.

I stay light on the pedal with SW2, TQ4, TM2, POD99 and the truck runs and shifts smoothly but if I want smoke then a little punch and it rolls out the pipe.

Ya, I've got 5.11b and you're right about the smoke. If I'm light on the throttle it's nice but if I lay into it a bit she'll puke it out. :)

I ran about 300 miles on 95% Interstate and filled up when I got back, I HAND CALCULATED 24.1 MPG. I was about to fall out lol, that was SW1 TQ4 TM4. I'm trying out SW3 TM4 TQ4 and I like it so far mileage seems to be a tad bit better while towing. EGT's run about 100 degrees hotter but thats only 800 degrees at half throttle acceleration, 650 to degrees 700 cruising.

No fair! You've got a 6 speed.

Yup. I haven't drove the truck much lately so I haven't done any hand calculated. That was on a 55 mile round trip to get my ball joints installed over rolling hills doing about 58 mph. My guess is that it will average around 20 or a little better if I can keep my foot out of it. The Jr. really wakes the truck up..even on sw2 so it's hard not to goose it once in a while.

I was just curious. My overhead is about .5 to 1 full mpg higher in most cases then when I hand calculate. But my driving is very short and a little highway ( its only 6 miles to my shop from my house ). Right now I am averaging around 15.5-16.5 mpg with my sig mods below.

I just know some people claim high numbers and I have a hard time believing them. I understand I have a dually and 4x4, but I've had people tell me their dually 4x4 gets 24 mpg on the highway, I find that to be a stretch.....

Ya, my sig used to look similar to yours and my mileage was not too hot. I talked to a nice guy on here...carl48 and he explained some things to me and my sig changed significantly. I still need to get a psm kit, exhaust and a cam but money stands in the way. PM me if you want to know what he said. I don't want to publicly talk about it because some of the things are great for performance but Sh*t for mileage gains. Also, your trip is so short I imagine you barely see operating temps before getting to work. It's a wonder you're getting what you're getting.
