Smarty Dyno numbers, Dyno Jet

So I dynoed my truck today at Rentless Diesel up in Conroe. It was a DynoJet, no idea what the model was. I did a few runs with the Smarty on level 9 and I messed with the Revo settings a bit, but I found the best setting to be T Management on 4 everything else default. We did 4th gear runs, 5th and 6th gear. It did better in the higher gears but not by much, a few HP. I also had the MP8 on there. either 0 % or 100%.

All in all I am disappointed in the Smarty, Yep I said it, at least looking at the numbers I am. I just wish I would have done a baseline run. Seat of the pants on the road it feels ALOT stronger then this but it is what it is.

Smarty Level 9, TM #4, Timing and Rail default
388hp 871ftlbs

Smarty same as above, with MP8 100%
410HP 904ftlbs

I felt the numbers to be 40 hp and 100ftlbs low

I will get the print out as soon as I can figure out this scanner on this computer

I have pretty much your set up and I am gonna dyno this weekend so we will have a comparison then. I am on 37s though

I hope you get better numbers, I have always felt my truck to be a bit weaker then other 6.7's. I am on 35's. Talking to Chris, (his dyno) they have not seen it make much difference in the size of the tire. He had one guy with 38's lay down 700ish. They pulled them off and put the stock tires on, it was a gain of like 20hp. Not really enough to go through the trouble.

40 would put it where I thought it should be. I would have to ask what kind it was, When he was setting up before the run it would put a load on and off and on and off and then do the run.

I have to say the 6.7 sounds freaking awesome on the Dyno, Two buddys there 06 5.9's while we where there.

Paul has a 64 turbo, 90hp sticks, 4"TBE, Smarty, Edge, and HTS tranny, He laid down 571hp and around 1100ftlbs.

Jake has a 62 Turbo, Triple Dog, Dr. P box, and Spray, Stock exhuast no muffler but Cat,
541hp, and with spray 620ish hp and 12?? ish ftlbs

I plan on going a run with SW9 and then another with the mp8 and then finally with edge on hot

Dang that sucks brother. If it was a true dyno i think the torque management feature is whats making these trucks feel so strong. I cant believe the MP-8 didnt add more power than that stacked though. Where you paying attention to rail pressure as you were dynoing?

corrected number, but again thats about 10hp difference.

Looks like the issue was not putting enough load on the truck before doing the run. Reading the thread that HighRPMS posted it sounds like we did everything wrong. I don't know when I will get another chance to do some runs.

I was talking to Paul a bit ago (fellow that laid down 571hp today) about my low numbers. He feels pretty confident that they are low also as the three of us drove home like it was a Nascar race. He said he had a hard time catching me. He said it also felt like I pulled on the top end. I never even paid attention while we where hot rodding. Also his truck is 1000lbs heavier. I weigh in at 8500 now as he is just a tab over 9500lbs. So I am not to worried about it. I am pretty sure the numbers are where I think they are, just need to get on the rollers and prove it.

dyno can be a pain in the butt, We had to foot brake a lot on a no load dyno but I still get 30 hp better on a load dyno. Sorry to hear about your numbers but if it feels good it is probably just not working correctly on the dyno.

#13 ·
Looking at your numbers, i would think mine are closer to yours if all you had was the pressure box and Smarty. Did you get a run with just the Smarty? It is what it is, When I get time we will run it again

Not sure but I think torque mgt. is increasing pressure to the trq converter ,making it grip earlier/quicker, my smarty on 7 and tqon 3 I could feel vibration like I was over powering the clutch pack in the tranny or overpowering the converter ....only in 4,5,6. I turned the tq down to 1 and the vibe went away. I am very pleased w/smarty so far!

i hope all goes well for you guys, i just dynoed my truck with my superchips for shoots and farts, and it put down 392hp,807tq. im pretty happy all in all. fells real smooth, dosnt feel like its hurting anything, and now with the quads it fells way stronger.

I didn't read all the posts here, but here is the problem I know some people have dynoing the Smarty on the 5.9. It is the torque management, but that term is really a misnomer, because it has nothing to do with the way the transmission or drivetrain handles the torque. It should actually be called throttle tip in. 1 being pretty much stock and 4 being hair trigger throttle. Anyway, on the 5.9 the #4 torque management is aggressive that it will drain the rail at a relatively low rpm and leave your pressure numbers down (regardless of how many pressure boxes etc. you have on it) unless you have a pretty good modded pump or dual fueler. I would be interested to see the numbers again, but on TM #3...

Did you read the CompD thread that Highrpm posted because in way that would tie in with having the TM set on #4. But rather draining the rail you would be spinning up faster then the turbo would spool up properly. At least according to Marco you have to load the 6.7 real good before running up.

I am pretty positive that draining the rail is not a issue on my truck. Before I pulled the PMT I was using it as just gauges with the Smarty. It never showed any signs of a drained rail.

The fellow that made 571hp with his 06 5.9 (paul) he also has 90hp sticks with Smarty and Edge. That is a stock CP3 with a pricol RP gauge watching it. No issues with a loss of RP. He also made a TON of smoke through the whole pull. If he would get more air to the truck he would make better numbers. During my run I made little smoke, Hell Gale Banks would have been proud.

Excellent thread gentleman!

I am planning on trying to get on the dyno on Sunday with both a Smarty and XRT. Numbers will be posted as well as Videos.

You're right, it might not be an issue with the 6.7, but I've seen it first hand on a 5.9 I had it happen on my truck before I modded the pump, I think it is very load dependent as well as programming.

Dyno Jet is not a load dyno.

Its worthless for turbo trucks.

You need to use a Mustang dyno. It loads the wheels and also for diesels you set it to make the run 13 seconds or so long. That way the load is on and it spools up the turbo correctly.

In other words you can say 1100 rpm -3500 rpm and set it for 13 seconds or 30 whatever you want. It will load it and allow it to rpm up at the right speed to use up the set amount of time.
Dyno days use a portable dyno and its a Jet most of the time. Those just free spin, no load. You have to brake to get the turbo to even spool.

Really? You have experience in these matters? You can equip a dynojet with an eddy current load unit (like ours) and load trucks to the moon if you want.

Most dynojets used at dyno competitions are Dynojets also, and most don't have a load unit. You can foot brake the truck to get the boost up as long as the turbo(s) arent too big and get pretty comparable numbers also.

Mustang dynos require a bunch of data input to calculate #'s so they are easier to manipulate. Dynojets are pretty much the standard.

To the OP. I would almost bet money that you would make more power on 7 than 9. I did..and many other folks do as well.
The MP8 on 100% might get you a few..until it blows your injectors all to hell.
Just because it has a level 9 doesn't mean it will work especially well for you. Try the lower levels.

#27 ·
so when you say foot brake it. you mean hold the brake a bit to build your boost and then let off the brake and smash the skinny or what? I am going to dyno this weekend and not sure what kind of dyno they have.

#28 ·
Yeah, get it up into OD with the converter locked. Prob 60MPH or so. With your foot on the gas, load the truck by applying the brake with the other foot. Do it hard until your boost is up around 10-12psi (on a stock turbo) and then roll into and remove the foot on the brake.

Have fun!

Here is the graph, Smarty run and Smarty + MP8 run. If you look at the graph you can see the run was not right. The HP peaked at 2300rpm and flat lined to 3400rpm. HP does not flat line like that so I should have known there was something we where missing on the runs "Load".

Its been stated about loaded dynos and what not I know my xrt faster then my edge but look in my sig and my xrt was on a dynojet dyno the eedge on a loaded land and sea dyno so u can see the diff in my sig haha... then people was saying it was 15% correction factor puttin me at 385 lol but from my edge to xrt 120 I duidnt loose that kind of power and raced people I have with my old edge and xrt by far faster.. I aam sure you about 500 horse close to it... my clutch walked alittle on my dyno run to..

Your graph looks nice and flat on the hp Erik is right you might try seven on all default settings and work from there. A boost fooler helps it will take out the spike in torque and carry it a lot longer in the rpms. Also I never run with the box set at 100 more like playing between 50 and 75 seems to yield the best numbers, I lose power at 100. It takes some time to get it all working right.

I think your just uppset with your real numbers buddy. I was building boost with no problem and bigger turbo as well as was Paul. Chris knows how to run the truck on the rollers. The leveling of on the HP I would acount to the fact your truck was getting into the rev limiter and then cutting out.

Oh and correction I have a muffler and made 546 hp on fuel. Dyno Jets are the most proven and consistant dyno's. Mustangs can throw numbers all over the place easy to manipulate and or get set up wrong.
