Single turbo upgrade for towing with RV 275's??

I currently tow a 12,500lb 32 ft toyhauler on occasion up big long hills. Looking for a little better towing experience.

My truck currently has the following

1. Stock hx35
2. RV 275's
3. Pac Brake elbow mount PRXB
4. Snow Tow max water meth
5. Air Dog II 165
6. SB Clutch
7. 5" exhaust
8. BD Pulse ex mani
9. CFM intake horn
10. S&B intake
11. Edge Comp set on 1 when towing

I would have to ditch the turbo mount PRXB and get a inline with a HX40 downpipe.

So with all that said, what turbo would work for towing up hills and let me keep the rv 275's?

A Super B??? Or a Phatshaft 62/65/12??? or something else? I want to stay reliable with low EGT's is my goal, if that is even possible.

I have spoken to Jkidd, BD, and other places and got different answers from each... Wanted to see wat you guys think :cbadge2:

Super B, hands down IMO. It's on the cheap side for a turbo, yet a very very good towing upgrade. It'll handle what you have just fine, keep things cool, and even let you crank that Edge up if you wanted.

If you plan on going bigger on the fuel side then a 62/65 or 60/68 would also be a good choice, but I don't think you'll need it where you're at right now.

Talk to Jamie at CPP or Jkidd again and get that Super B on the way!

He shouldn't need another clutch, my Valair 400hp rating holds up to everything I've got, I don't see why he'd need anything more than that if he's just swapping a turbo and know's how to drive.

I still say Super B, it will spool just the same as your stock hx35 if you turn the Comp up a level or two, will handle it turned all the way up when you want to play, and still keep things way cooler climbing those hills. Just my .02 from experience anyway

Keywords "if he is just swaping a single turbo"

Not saying he needs a bigger clutch right now but the rate his truck has been modded in the last couple months it looks like a slippery slope past 400 hp (talk of twins in other threads etc).

He has water meth also that can be used to keep temps in check.

IMO, losing the exhaust brake for the minimal benefits of the Super B IS NOT an upgrade.

The Edge in the EZ setting with the RV275's "should be" around 300ish at the wheels.

To me, that is almost a perfect towing hp # that you can really flog the set up, not have to drive by the gauges and pull alot of weight.

I would not throw more money at it.

I would spend the money on a dyno session if possible and play around the different settings on the comp and water meth to give an idea of where the hp #'s are. Then hook up the trailer and start experimenting.

To each there own but again I would leave it.

Thanks for all the inputs guys. I Haven't towed since installing the water meth, RV 275's and Air Dog II yet. So I guess I will need to try that out first, then see how it is. Ill have to determine if that does the trick or not.

I agree with keeping the stock turbo.
If the exhaust heats up a little, install an adjustable boost elbow and turn the boost up a few psi.

what about the HE351VE with the fleece brake controller? it still flows good and has a built in exhaust brake when activating the switch. Spool up with the VGT is really quick and it flows the same as an HE351 which flows equal to or a little more than the super B.

Tthe supeer b is a great turbo I would get that andhow often do you travel up the hill and how bad is the downhills cuz if I would travel a lot and the dowhills are bad and have to brake sometime I would put a exhaust brake and some people are like they suck they don't sound like the jakes well there not and they do save you a lot of brakes my buddy tows a lot and justyou the exhaust brake everytime he needs to slow down and stop and he said they are great and he never changes is brakess as much as he did before

It already has a Pac Brake PRXB and a Tekonsha P3 brake controller, I have no issues stopping at all.

I would get an adjustable boost elbow from jkidd, set it at 35psi.
Turn that comp up to 5x5 and drive reasonable.
Watch your pyro gauge and watch your egt temps.
Then report back as to how you liked the towing experience then, and what your boost and egts get up to

Thanks or all the input guys, Thetowing experience wasn't that bad before, just had to go to third gear at about 35MPH up a really long hill on I-80 through Donner Pass here in Northern CA. I bought the Snow Tow Max, RV 275's and finally installed my Air Dog II 165 to make it tow a little better. I have also added a 5" exhaust and got rid of the BHAF for a S&B intake.

Like I said haven't towed with the upgrades yet, so I'm hoping they do the trick. I'll report back. I can definately feel the power with about 20% pure meth and 80% water in there, and the injectors, so it may just be enough to make me happy.

I know this is old, but I just got the inline brake and a Super B from CPP. Can't wait to get his all on there :)

please report back and let us know how it takes the hills now!

I'd keep the setup you have, if you're dead set on a turbo and want to keep the brake I'd just do a 35/40 hybrid but IMO you won't see enough changes to justify it

Well I already ordered it all. I will have the option to put in some 100-125hp injectors also. I'm suprised nobody thinks the Super Bee will be an improvement over a stock turbo? I know CPP is tying to sell me stuff but they said it would be a VAST improvement over stock with the setup I have.

I'm also wondering if now I'd be able to tow on 5x5 on the Comp, that would be fun. Of course If I don't go to high in boost, I don't have studs........Yet lol

For what you are doing, the Super B has more turbine flow, so it will move more heat than a stock turbo. We have tried the Phat Shaft 62 with RV 275's and it works well, but the turbo is not seeing peak efficiency. We will gladly change the order for you if you would like to try the PS62. Shoot me a PM or email before 7:30 (ship time) and I'll change the order.

I think the super b will be great! In fact when I add my rv275's I'm gonna add a super b because my hx is ready for a rebuild and I'd rather spend that money on the super b!

You should have no trouble at all towing on 5x5 (I actually like 5x4 better for some reason)
Mopar1973man tows his big @ss Rv (something like 26-30') which he says is ~17k truck and trailer on 5x5 with no issue. Not sure how much weight your pulling but it should be fine...

Sounds good, I also spoke with two more reputable Shops off this forum, and most say RV 275's water meth, Comp turned up and a Super B will be a winning combo. I'm gonna give i a try as is and if I need bigger injectors, I'll do so.

I switched to an inline. I have a brand new turbo mount PAC brake for sale in the classifieds.
