hey all,

just like the title says. i've got a jingle-jangle metallic rattling noise coming from the passenger side front when it hits a bump. large or small. i gave it to a stealership and they couldnt replicate it on the rack. so, they just gave it back to me. i also cant find any thing obvious when i'm under it with a flashlight in my mouth, trying to move things around and make it rattle again
i just thought maybe some of the experts who have maybe dealt with this before could chime in.
cheers, fellas

Check to make sure the bottom shock bolt is nice and tight.

I’m fighting same thing 05 4wd. I have new shocks, exhaust, track bar, front coils, steering box, ball joints, sway bar end links, bushings, universal joints, rear shackles, and dodge off road long arms. So I read two things Im gonna try. Thighten Body mounts. Then new steering shaft. Gonna be a bit before I will get to fix it. Down a vehicle right now.

i did some searching.

found a guy on here who had the same problem. the rattling would echo off of houses and bridges. which is what mine does.
he found it to be a broken pin on the brakes. so, i'll be checking that out soon.
checks your brakes, bud. might be it.

Oh. My rattle is most heard at low speeds. It’s like a reverberate type rattle. Maybe near transmission. I heard the output shaft housing in these trucks are prone to crack. They make a brace to fix it but my truck didn’t come with the cross member. So I have to install that first.

I gotcha. My noise is at any speed. If I hit any kind of bump with the passenger side front wheel, it rattles and jangles like I'm santa clause coming to town. Lol

My noise like yours was the bottom shock bushing gone, so it would rattle on the bolt.

My two wheel drive was making a rattling sound like you are describing. It did it since I bought the truck and I didn't really think much of it. (Thought it was just pads in the calipers without ant-rattle clips) Everything was fine, the noise never changed, until there was a loud clunk and the front passenger wheel stopped turning.

I put it in reverse and everything rolled fine. Shifted into gear, and it would roll a few feet before "Bang!" the wheel would lock up. I managed to limp it home at like 3mph.

Turns out the source of the rattle was a loose caliper mount bracket. I had actually lost one of the bolts and the whole caliper rotated forward and slammed into the inside of the wheel locking it up. It was a $6 fix from autozone and a lesson learned.

Random rattles can be anything, the best thing you can do it crawl under and find it. Guessing based on other people’s rattles will run you down rabbit holes. Isolating the location helps a lot. I would start by jacking up the front end, jack stands under the axel ends. That will give you proper room to work and with the weight off the tires help rattles in the hub/breaks present themselves while not moving. With the wheel off the ground you can bang on stuff with a rubber mallet. Usually the sounds presents it’s self.

Also bang on the tires a lot. Hub bearings and u-joints can rattles while driving, usually at slower speeds when you hit a bump.

Also, get yourself a led headlight. If it were socially acceptable I would wear mine 24/7 like a hat, I love them. A creeper really helps too haha. I currently use something similar to this one. Works great.

Oh. I did notice last night. Everyone should consider this maybe. I was going over a large speed bump at work. It made a bump rattle sound twice. Once per axle. So in theory, it’s not in the axle/ driveshaft areas. If it was in a certain axle it would do it once. So maybe engine mounts? Tranny mounts? What’s everyone’s vote.?

80% of these truck issues are just like any other vehicle, the drivetrain is where it gets specific.
Exhaust hanger can rattle.
