hey guys need a little help on 2001 Dodge Ram quad cab,4x4,auto trans and vin 6 stock truck besides exhaust and filter. First diesel truck I’ve own I inherited the truck I know it sat for a year before I got it. Truck ran fine for about 2 weeks went to the store one morning came out had a check engine light on and the truck would start but shut off in about 5 seconds, It did it three more times then it ran fine. It had p1689 and the map sensor code. I replaced the map sensor, two new batteries, new battery cable ends, cleaned electronic connections with electrical cleaner n dielectric grease, replace fuel relay, fuel filter, check all fuses and then clear the codes. Truck ran great for about a week, then same problem went to the store one morning drove fine ( truck never had a dead pedal, trucking cutting off or lost of power anytime I have had the truck on road). Came out went to start Engine light was back and code p1689 the truck would just crank with no start. Was not able to clear the code so had the truck towed. Got the truck home check all fuel lines for leaks, lift pump was running when you turn the truck over n runs for 15 seconds, getting 12-15 psi fuel pressure to the injector pump while cranking. Pulled the plug from the back of the injector pump tested pin6 with my test light for ground which I had. Pin 7 for 12 volt power I had no power with the key in accessory or cranking only time my light would turn on was for a spilt second while turnin to the off position. I also did the hot wire test for injector pump that I got from blue chip diesel putting power to pin 7 and ground to pin 6. All I get is a click noise and it does it one time. My question is could it be both the ecm and injector pump bad? Any suggestions on my next step to diagnose? Thank you for the help

First, try to break up your posts with paragraphs so they are clear. The 1689 can be associated with a dead VP but there are some tests I would run before I condemned it.

1. The Blue chip test you did turns the pump on to just an idle state, but the pump can't crank the engine to get it running. You still have to turn it over with the starter (key) when you have it hot wired. You'll have to pull the wires from the pump to shut it off.

2. If you pull the fuel pump relay in the PDC and crank the engine it can also throw this code, which tells me if this relay doesn't power up or the pump doesn't see power on pin 7 and ground on pin 6 it could also cause this code. So I would start with testing this relay circuit and wiring.

- The 1689 code

- Wiring diagrams

Step 1
1 - I'd very carefully check for pin fitment problems with the harness connector at the back of the injection pump.
2 - Remove the fuel pump relay and check for power at pin 30, should be hot all the time
3 - check for power at pin 86, should be hot key on
4 - check for ground at pin 85, I would hook a test light to battery positive on this one and probe the ground.

Thank you for the help.... Sorry I failed to mention I did try to start the truck when doing the hot wire test. No luck on the start just crank....Pump did not make any noise while it was cranking just that one click when hooking up for the hot wire test.

Going out now to go over everything you sent me. Thank you again and will post results later

Double check that you are getting good connection on when you hot wire the pump, sounds like you are getting it if you are hearing it click, that's all you'll get from just hot wiring it. If it still won't start when you crank it the pump is dead.

As to why your not getting power on Pin 7, I'd double check your test connections and then go from there checking you the relay and related circuit.

Either you have two separate problems or the testing is 100%

Glad ya got it, glad to help. The ring connector that connects the fuel pump relay ground to the fender?

I have something similar with a 2001 Cummins where the truck shows p1689 and it starts fine and idles smooth but if you were to tap the gas or give it full throttle it will go to 1500 rpm and you let off it goes back to idle.
Tested the wires along with power and ground and it all appears to be fine. The apps shows to work in my scan tool but I have no rpm from the injection pump and no rpm from the cam sensor.
I was wondering if anyone knows about a corilation between the two or if something else is bad like the pump.
