Out With the New (CP4) and IN With the OLD (CP3)

Had my CP4 injector pump replaced with the old CP3 design on my 2019 Ram Cummins. Never saw a designation of CP3.3 but it just may be that. Couple things of interest. One is there was a programming change to the PCM, not the ECM. I do not know the nature of the change and neither did the service advisor. Second was a change in the power steering line that I had never heard about. The first picture below is the new faulty design CP4 that was removed.

Here is the new/old CP3 they just put in. You sure can see the differences.

There is a module kit used and this paperwork details that and more.

So now there begs the question of how does it work?

Only have the 35 mile ride back from the dealer to offer an opinion. Never noticed any change in operation. The drive back started in downtown Bradenton, Florida in hideous traffic and lights. Then I got on the Interstate for about 12 miles and finished the ride with about 12 more miles of rural road back to the house. I re-set this EVIC mpg readout right after I cleared the first stop light after leaving. That's when I thought of it. There were many more so did not miss much. Took this picture after I pulled into the driveway at home.

Pretty typical readout for my mpg without towing. Now that will NOT be correct as my EVIC is most always a full MPG higher than calculated mileage. Sometimes it can even be a little more than 1 mpg too high. My guess is it should actually be in the low to mid 21's based on the BS I had to initially drive through. My conclusion after such a brief test distance is, "little to no change" in fuel mileage.

CP3 or CP4 ... the difference is design and reliability. I am happy to get the old reliable. Thank You Stellantis.

Should work as well as the CP3s that have been in these trucks since 03 with revisions over the years. Now you just don't need to worry and stress about it

Very nice. That should give you some peace of mind. Now put some miles on that rig!!!

Heard variations of that for months. Went to the parts department of Firkins Ram in Bradenton, Fl. They immediately put a detailed vin# request into their computer through to Stellantis and got approval to order. Only thing is they had to hold off for a couple weeks to do that order as they were only allowed two units each week.

The order went in on the day promised and the arrival was about three weeks later. Then my appointment was set the day the hurricane hit. Obviously it was delayed until yesterday. Done today. Simple as that. if your dealer is hedging there must be other reasons you are not aware of.

Good for you! I had parts on hold for my ‘19 about 3 weeks ago and dropped off my truck—the swap got nixed as they said there was “no fix” for the ‘19’s yet—another dealer told me the exact same thing, in the same words!

As I understand it the ones who had prior TSB done that installed new code can not get the updated CP pump installed because the prior code they installed for those TSB's will not play nice with the new code they need to install with the new CP 3 pump, have heard once new code is installed it has effed up computers, they are trying to find a fix other then writing new code for each truck that needs a new CP 3 installed

That's pretty much it.

If you held off on prior updates, the dealer should be able to order it for 2019 trucks.

If those incompatible updates were installed, you're still in a holding pattern. No good deed goes unpunished.

Seems they would have it figured out by now if it was just code changes needed. I suspect they're building stock of PCM/ECM for those that need them, then they'll bench flash all the old ones.

Never did two other recalls - ABS and windshield wipers. That meant my truck never had any programming changes.

Always thought the ECM and PCM were different. The ECM controlled all the vehicle functions outside of the power train. The PCM did powertrain issues, like ignition timing, injection pressures and transmission control. They may be housed in the same physical unit but are electronically separate so that mods to one does not affect the other.

Oh well - never heard that a ECM flash to control the ABS system was also a PCM flash that affected engine operation. Might be right as it is hinted that way in the paperwork that came with the repair/update I received from the dealer.

As far as FCA vehicles, people incorrectly think that ECM means engine control module.
ECM is just a generic acronym for ANY Electronic Control Module (body control module, door control module, abs, etc).
The PCM is the engine control module (and also the transmission control module for the 68rfe).

I knew about the recall and heard all the stories about dealers not being able to perform the pump switch. I have a 2020 Ram 3500 that had the CP4 and I got the recall notice in the mail and just tossed it on the desk and let it sit as I figured it would take forever to get done anyways. Then when I was doing the 15,000 mile oil and filter change and fuel filter changes, I noticed brake fluid leaking from one of the hoses coming from either a power brake line or one of the hydro-boost lines from the power steering pump. So I contacted the dealer here local (small town on an island connected by a bridge on the north end in Puget Sound in WA State) to have warranty work done on the leaking hydraulic line/s. When I got to my appointment the service guy said they had a CP3 fuel pump in stock for recall work for my truck as the VIN popped up on their recall list. I was thrilled and said "git'er done!"

Long story short, I guess I got really lucky as I had the CP4 pump changed out in about half a day along with the warranty work I had originally asked for. Iwas surprised due to the very small dealership on the island, that they were able to even get the new pumps for the recall. I was also surprised that there was also an additional steering hydraulic hose that was replaced to reroute the hydraulic line due to the new fuel pump being installed. It wasn't the original hose I asked about with the warranty service work, so I had 2 hoses replaced.

Now after about 5,000 miles since the work being done the truck runs just like it did with the CP4, but with peace of mind for me having that CP3 installed.

did your news CP3 make a loud noise and does it still after 5000 miles make that same noise?

My towing mpg has really not changed. Did over 1,000 miles towing recently. It sure was better when I kept my speeds below 75 mpg. On return with a larger load and going up to 80 mph, I expected it to be lower mpg. It was a bit lower than what I expected.

My current conclusion is there was no real fuel mileage change from the old CP4 pump.

Curious about the guys who didn’t wait for the factory recall and installed the aftermarket “no tune” fuel pumps. Any new updates/reflash from the dealer may cause some issues I’m guessing?
🤔

Had mine replaced two weeks ago. They said engine and trans computer flashed with updates. Trans definitely shifts better, power hard to tell if any change. I did notice 1-2 MPG better at 55-60 using 5th gear. It never did that before. It still does as I posted when new at 66-68 in 5 th I get 2-3 MPG better. All I can figure is with 4:10 gears engine RPM and Aero must cause the increase. And yes the rpm is up there so I do not drive like that in 5th. This is all non towing. Towing no difference or 1 less. I can tell pulling under my stilt home ( slats on three sides) motor is a tad louder. At least I have piece of mind like my 2006 truck. My CP4 was like my 2001 with VP 44, lift pump problems and Mexico cracking block problems. I think that was a 105 stamped block. Anyway glad all recalls are done.

I stopped at my local (only) Ram dealer this morning to see if there's been any movement on getting trucks in for the service, given I e been told there is a backorder on pumps etc.

Much to my surprise, after the service manager checked with parts, he told me I'm about three weeks out????!!

He going to schedule an appointment for may, but told me if I drop it off during the first week of April, he'll get me worked in. They'll also do the other recalls (tailgate and wheel stud) at the same time.

I'm very happy to get this finally completed.

Now for July to roll around and get my collision damage fixed [emoji34]

I am pretty sure I got lucky. Service advisor said they didn’t have a pump and it had to be ordered based off of the VIN of the truck. I went back and talk to the parts manager. He said he had one in stock and attached it to my work order for my truck. I guess I was in the right place at the right time.

I picked up my truck from the dealer this morning. CP4 recall and PCM flash, wheel stud, and tailgate latch recalls completed. They also found that the front fuel canister was cracked and leaking so replaced that and also found that the HMSL screws were loose (from the factory) and had been leaking into the interior, thus why I asked them to check, based on the discolored headliner. Waiting to hear from @RamCares to see if they will maybe replace the headliner since I'm out of warranty and its been leaking a while, but took time to see.

The truck seems to run quieter? with the new pump, but haven't driven it enough to see other improvements. Just very happy to finally have this addressed.

For any of you who have had the recall performed, did you have a CEL activation shortly after picking up your truck from the dealer? I picked up mine on Monday and put about 30 miles on it in the subsequent few days after, only to have the CEL come on on day three... Took it to the dealer and he put their code reader on the truck and he said there weren't any "pending" codes (which I interpreted to mean no codes indicating why it may have come on). He reset the light and said he's seen two or three do the same thing. Told me to drive it and if it comes on again, they'll look further. He said its possible the tech may not have fully reset something during the various recalls they performed.

Drove it over the weekend without issue (maybe 40 miles total) to have the CEL come back on last night on my way home from work... nothing I can hear or feel to indicate anything is wrong except the chime then dash light. Back it goes to the dealer.

The CEL does not come on without having a code in the system idk what kind of smoke the dealer is trying to blow up your a$$

I got a P0299 Turbo Under boost CEL a few times. There is a slight hesitation or stumble right off idle at intermittent times. I have cleared it myself. Hasn't popped back up in the past couple weeks.

Took the truck in a few days after my previous post and they performed the flash listed above for the 2019's above. Driven it almost daily since, only to have the CEL come back on today. No warning, feeling of anything wrong, or signs of something going on. I'll check codes in the morning.

This is ridiculous. I really hope they can get this figured out.
