One engine knock on startup?

I've noticed a couple of times now throughout the winter, when I start my truck usually first thing in the morning after sitting all night there is one single knock right when the engine fires up and then that's it it seems to idle and run fine. If I shut the truck off right away and then start it again it doesn't do it again. It happened today though after the truck had sat only an hourish. I am just wondering if anyone could tell me why it would knock? Is it something to be concerned about? Or is it just cold?

Not quite sure about one knock. May be just cold oil.

There is a "cold start" mode I've noticed. To help start on a very cold start, the ECM advances the timing and you get a burst of "diesel rattle" when it starts for about a 1/2 second. Is that maybe what you're hearing?

How about a injector leaking and putting a droplet of fuel in combustion chamber. The extra fuel in chamber ignites along with regular injection and fuel knock happens.

In my opinion its normal, if you go to you tube and watch cold start videos, you'll find they all do it, I think it's just a stroke of the old popcorn diesel sound, don't know if I have explained it well at all, but I wouldn't worry about it.

It's normal mine does it all the time if I do not let the heater cycle when it's cold. It sounds like an old 12 valve for a split second when popping off.
