Oil Level Question

Do you top off your oil level after engine shut down which would indicate an overfill on the dipstick when cold. This of course would make sure that the oil level is completely full at engine operation. Or, do you fill to the top of the safe zone and leaving it there, which would mean that the oil level is low at engine operation. Although, this would still show in the save zone on the dipstick.

The reason I'm asking is that my dealer always puts in 12 qts and the oil level is always to the top notch of the dipstick, above the safe zone. I just figured they didn't allow enough time to properly drain all the oil out, and then I drain out to the safe zone. I seen this discussion on the 98.5-02 forum. To me it does make sense to have the oil level full at engine operation.:confused013:

Here is what I do, when changing oil on my 2012. After draining, and installing oil filter, prefilled with one quart, I add 10 more quarts, for a total of 11. I start the truck, let run a bit, then shut down. After sitting for 15-20 minutes, I recheck the dip stick, and usually add about 1/2 of a quart more. Puts the oil level right at the top of the full range on the dip stick. Since I have more time than money, I let mine drain for 45 minutes, or so. When I put in the full 12 quarts, it was overfull on the dip stick.

So the question is,, what is correct. 12 quarts like the manual says for a refill with filter, or, to the correct level on the dip stick? Is the dip stick, made by Ram, made too long? I say we need to call Cummins on this one.

Mine took 12 quarts to the full:thumbsup: line

Is your full line at the top line of the safe zone or at the top notch above the safe zone. That's where mine is now, just a little below that. The manual shows it at the top line of the safe zone.:confused013:

I get mine up to operating temperature first. Let the oil drain out for about 10 mins, fill the new filter with about half a quart then dump 11.5 more in the eng and call it a day.

on my 12 i would let it sit over night let everything drain down and like others i have more time then money lol i let it drain til hardly anything is coming out then put oil filter with oil in it on. then i do dump all 12 in check it looks full then start it let it run then kill it check it and see its low. i let it sit for awhile then go back and check and usually its at the line. hope this helps~!

dealership literally told me on last change, that cummins is correct on their fluid capacity recommendations. However, to put in that amount and everything be correct you have to let the block drain for like 45 mins. hence the reason it takes 2 hrs to do an oil change. But then again I've heard some woppers in my day. Idk doesn't sounds wrong.

I've changed oil, with filter, twice on my '13 2500 and both times dumped 3 gallons in. Both times stick reads about an eighth inch over full. So far I'm not worried about it. What's half a quart overfill with a 12 quart capacity gonna hurt.

You are probably correct. However, in a stock truck, with the regen process, the oil level will increase between oil changes. That 1/2 quart I leave out, hopefully allows some room for the added dilution between changes. I believe that the 2013's and up do not have this issue. Also, as stated, the full 12 quart change puts the oil level above the full mark. to each their own thou. Best wishes.
