Ok so im lookin at an 01 ext. ctd. auto with 117,000 miles. It has gauges and the tranny has some type of upgrades but he doesnt know what. I noticed a leak on the front of the motor. Its between the motor and fan. Its a 3 inch round canister lookin thing bout 6 inches long with a black hose conected to each end. Its leaking. What would that be from? oh and they want $16,000 for it. Ist that a good price?

So you decided to get a Cummins. I saw on Powerstroke forum a while back that you said you were keeping the sroker...but anyway glad to see you are having a change of thought :thumbsup. The price sounds ok, but is it a 4WD or 2WD? Also does it still have the in take lift pump? Make sure and check for codes. Turn the key on off, on off, on off and on the third time you can see if any codes come up and then check them. This will help to make sure the truck has a good VP, APPs and whatnot. If it is 4WD make sure and test it that the actuator is not going bad. And I do not know for sure but that canister might have something to do with blow-by..I can go look at my truck and see if I have anything like that. Good luck with the possible purchase though :thumbsup.

the leak is most likely from the crankcase breather / blowbuy canister. if it is that its nothing to worrie about

ya its 4x4 and how do you know if it has the intank lift pump. Thats what i told the guy that it was some type of blowby and he was gana get it checked the last time i talk to him. The only other thing im worried about is the Tranny.
I still dont know what to do. I want to keep my truck but i like power and the ford is not the truck to put power to cuz it cost so much. CTD is the truck that lives on more power and more power. Im still in the middle of the decision.

If he does not have an aftermarket pump mounted to the frame rail like a FASS, GDP, Air Dog or something equivalent to this then it is an intake pump. Make sure that the blow by is ok...you can have it relocated so it is not so bad, but make sure it does not use a lot of oil. Honestly the tranny should be ok if you are not out doing boosted launches and going crazy with it. If you want to be safe then replace the VB with a Goerends, DTT or Suncoast Valve Body and also throw in a good single or triple disc torque converter and you will be fine. Anything is going to break if you are playing to hard with it...just keep that in mind. You are gonna be much happier with the power of the Cummins and how easy it is to mod a 24V..so I would say to go with the Cummins :thumbsup.

i just dnt wana buy a diff. truck and then be disapointed in it. Ive had people tell me go with a dodge and others say it would be the worst thing to do and i know ford and dodges guys are sayin that but. They say the drivetrain sucks on the dodge like the balljoints and stuff.

I thought they only put the intank pumps in if you took to the dealership for warrany/repair. My 2001 has a engine block mounted lift pump. The oil leak is likely the breahter. Most people re-route the hose over the engine and let it dump out behind the engine so it doesnt leek oil if the truck is on an angle and doesnt get oil all over the front of the engine. Other possibility would be the vaccum pump but when they go out the leak is usually pretty extreme.

I went from a 02 PSD F-350 to my current truck. I loved the Ford. I dont really care too much for the truck part of the Dodge but I love the cummins. I still drive a 03 PSD for work and I like it. Ideal truck to me would be a 05-07 F350 with a 5.9 Cummins in it. The Powerstrokes are too darn hard to work on compared to the Cummins.

Yeah it was hard. I couldnt qualify to buy a house with it on my credit so I had to dump it then after I bought the house I need something cheaper and the Dodges are a lot cheaper then the Fords (at least around here) I am really glad I got the Dodge though I dont think I could go with anything that didnt have a Cummins in it again. (unless it had a CAT lol)

Cummins are way easier to work on, You only need to buy 6 injectors as to 8. The mods are cheaper and they got a good rep of lasting forever. I have had real good luck with my dodge. The inector p ump lasted 210k miles and the stock liftpump lasted 200K. Havnt had to do any major repairs unil now which was kinda un necessary. I pulled my stock tranny the day i bought a TST comp to upgrade to a coaltrain Trans and t.c. The old one was still good but it slipped now and then.
