KDP and Front Crank Seal Install Questions

Hello Everyone,
I started installing my KDP kit from BD Performance and have a few questions.

What is the dowel pin used for that comes in the kit?

Front seal service kit that was provided is 3904353. I did not find a dust shield provided with this kit. Is there suppose to be one? Do I have the wrong front seal?

The front seal service kit part number I found online is 3804899. Is this the right one?

The alignment tool to install the front cover onto the engine is a semi-clear stepped piece of plastic that allows the seal to slip over the crank without damaging the lip.

Are you supposed to install the alignment tool so that it will be trapped between the engine and timing cover? When you seat the timing cover to the engine, how do you remove the alignment tool?

Please let me know! Thanks.

The dowel pin is uneeded unless yours fell out. yes you should have received a dust sheild it is just a small black ring. Place the alingnment tool on the end of the crank and slide the seal on then you will need to slide the tool out. I couldn't get the seal to go on straight and ripped it i had to go buy another one which was designed much better than the BD one and went on with ease.

The installer sleeve should be in the seal when the cover is installed. The dealer said the the dust seal is only needed in dusty or off road use.

The installation tool is easiest if set into the seal first, with the wider part towards the engine. then the wider part fits into the end of the crank, as your sliding the cover/seal on the lip of the seal will stretch over the wider part, once the cover is on you can remove the installation sleeve.

INSTALL THE SEAL DRY!!!

Timing cover installed!

Yeah that seal alignment tool worked great.

Now onto 4K GSK, Pyro gage, AFC springs, and valve springs!

I did forget to mention one problem I had.

The timing cover gasket provided in the kit was the wrong part number, 3914385.

The correct cover gasket is 3918673.

So make sure you have the right parts before you start applying loctite and silicone!

Finished my KDP today. I got a kit from Napa for $45 that has the crank seal, dust cover, gear case-to-cover gasket, gear case-to-block gasket and crank seal install cone...... Made my own tab for the KDP and used some loctite and RTV silicone to put it all back together........ Fun leisurely fix.... :)

Kdp

Finally did my KDP on my 94 this weekend too. Happy to say that at 440,000 miles, the KDP was tight, and had not moved at all. Pretty straight forward, the BD instructions are kind of basic. Especially on the seal. I took the cover to the guy up the road, and had him press in the new seal, much easier than trying to hammer it in on the bench. He didn't even charge me.

When I did mine, the pin was protruding .103" @ 180k miles. I tapped it back in and put the plate over it. Good thing I caught it. I would have given it another 10k miles before falling out!

just finished mine as well. Fairly straight forward. Just made my own plate and bought a little longer bolt ... added some loctite and should be good to go now .. thanks to this forum for bringing to light the issue to an otherwise "not in the know" 12v owner:thumbsup:

Even though I have a press I've found it easier to use a drill press (not running) to push in the seal.
Good trick for a person who has a drill press but not a hydraulic press.

I used the drill press method too. Make sure you put a piece of wood under it for support and after it is flush the installer tool works much better.

OK, the Napa Part # is TCS46001 on my receipt. Description is "Timing Cover Set"

This was found by doing a vehicle part search for 95 Dodge Ram 3500 Diesel.....

Hope this helps somebody save some $$. :)
