Is It Safe to Run Performance Level 5?

My power train is stock other than being deleted. I run my XRT Pro on Performance because I like the driveability of the truck at that setting. H&S tells me I "should be fine" given the driving habits I described to them, and they implied that Performance works best with timing on 4 or 5.

What are your thoughts? Am I just asking for trouble if I'm running Performance? Or if I raise the timing from default 3 to level 5? Mostly I worry about the head studs.

My driving habits are what I'd consider strong but not aggressive. I rarely get into it enough to blow black smoke, but I do somewhat frequently accelerate hard enough that I'll see 2400-2500 RPM's as its going through the gears.

Thoughts?

MM Settings

Hoss, I am sure if you warm your truck up before you get on it you will be ok on the highest performance and timing 5 settings as long as you drive it nicely but usually if you step if down the stock fuel system will not keep up volume wise and you will probably get a check engine light besides feeling the engine miss or cut out. Most guys do not expierence this concern on the street setting. Good luck and I would turn off any defuel type settings on your minimaxx to be safe.

I have the XRT Pro and therefore don't have any defueling options (unless defueling is defaulted in the XRT, but I don't think it is).

I always drive nice and easy until I reach around 200 degrees on the coolant. I'm not trying to race anyone. I just like the way it drives on Performance and I'd like to experiment with the Level 5 timing. I just don't wanna blow a head gasket doing it.

Just FYI, I asked these same questions of H&S and here's their reply...

Thank you for the email. We would be more than happy to answer your questions.

1) Unfortunately this is one of those questions that is impossible for us to answer, as there are many many variables involved that are out of our control. You run the risk of damaging your truck running bone stock. Increasing HP does put more strain on the drive-train if it is abused, but based on your explanation of your driving habits you should be fine as long as hard parts remain in good condition, maintenance is kept up on etc...

2) You are correct in the fact that the higher timing levels are generally better to run with the higher power levels. For Performance 4 or 5, for Street 3 or 4, for Tow 2 or 3 and Stock 1 or 2. Generally speaking, the higher timing levels provide lower EGT's but more cylinder pressure. Lower timing levels have a little higher EGT's but lower cylinder pressure. Cylinder pressure is what pushes the piston down to create HP, food for thought.

3) We got carried away and answered this in question 2.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Sincerely,

H&S Tech Support

I've been running it for awhile before I purchased MCC software. Go easy on it until fully warmed up and try not to go over 70-75% throttle. I got my best MPG doing this. After looking at the timing tables you should be fine. Load timing on 5, no ATT (no turbo) and set power level on street and you'll be go to go.

PS Do not tow/haul on this setting.

Thanks for the input. With the XRT Pro I don't have the option of MCC or ATT and really don't even know what those things do. I'm gonna give it a try though and see how it does. I'd feel better about it with head studs. I may eventually bite the bullet and get some just so I don't have to worry about it as much.

Always had the XRT Pro on Hot when it was called that, but since I got the NC tune. I hat it on performance and #5 timing, with my propane fogging. I've driven fast car in my life time, at this setting plus the propane. This truck I like even better. I don't get on my truck mush from dead stop, but on rolling. It moves, you will like the setting.

Get studs. That way when you accidentally floor it up a hill nothing bad happens to ur stock head bolts.
