I do not plan on gauges so I want something that is safe and I can unplug it quickly so the big bad dealerman does'nt find it. Thanks!
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention this is for a 2005 CTD dually

If you don't want gauges stay stock.
If you don' want to take responsibility for your mods, don't do any!

the big bad dealer can still find it even if you take the "box" out before is goes in. unless it has a setting to return everything to stock, the things like fuel pressure will still be very high and they notice things like that. some dealers overlook what they can others try and find anything they can.

Man, talk about a flashback. I thought Bekim was my mother and I was still 15. :butt: :lol3:

Jason,

Edge EZ will likely fit the bill perfectly for you. In and out in a few minutes for trips to the dealer. Not alot of HP but just right for some towing and a little fun when unhooked. My OPINION is that it is one of the safest ones out there. I have never run gauges with it....mind you, I never saw the need for gauges with the Juice either:w:

If you are not going to tow much with it, an EZ will probably be OK without the gauges. But if you tow and are going to have it on the higher settings, I would at least want an EGT.
Just because you have gauges, a good tech is not automatically going to assume you are abusing the truck. I'd talk to the tech you would use and ask his opinion. Gauges are great monitoring tools. They will keep you from grenading an engine because you will know what's going on.

Randy
thanks jason

is there any reason you dont want gauges???? just wondering

Just to be very clear, I dont want it to sound like I am promoting or condoning NOT installing gauges....just relating my personal experience. I agree with everybody that if you want to keep an eye on things and monitor the goings on under the hood, gauges are the only way to do it. I feel that I know the product well enough that I can get away with it, but by no means I am saying that gauges arent neccesary.

Thanks guys for not blasting me:w:

Yeah, I was just trying to keep it looking stock so I did not raise any eyebrows from the D man. I might look into seeing how difficult it is going to be to take my manifold off. That will probably be the deciding factor.

Many claim modules are the most non-detectable of any of the power adders because they fool the reading in the ECM to think everything is operating normally. So when you remove them there are only normal parameters saved in the ECM.

Quad's XZT box is a good choice and you can unplug the box, then plug in the bypass, and no one would know any better.

Thanks guys for all the info. it is greatly appreciated. Keep em' coming!

I've got the xzt, works great, gained a little mpg too

Edge EZ doesn't need gauges? Maybe you should take a look at these two videos. The first is just a light romp on the pedal at 30 MPH. The second is WOT from the beginning up to 100 MPH. 1600 degrees. I also have the muffler and cat off which helps keep the EGT's down so don't let anybody tell you the EGT's with an Edge EZ doesn't need gauges
YouTube - EGT Temps
YouTube - EGT Temps WOT

In the second video the camera goes off the gauge a bit because the truck started to go sideways and I had to get it straight and also try and watch the camera, LOL
This was also done in 20 degree weather. You will notice the snow on the ground outside the window.

No gauges, then I'd say stay stock. These trucks can get too hot even in stock form when towing hard. Adding a box is too risky to do if you're going to fly blind. Do lots of guys do it without gauges? Sure. Would I put my name behind that advice? Heck no.

The Smarty on the 30hp level should be pretty safe, and give a pretty good increase in mileage. Also, its completly undetectable by the dealer.
Anything about about the 30-60hp level I would do a Pyrometer, like posted above. The best way is to use an SRT10 pillar (mounts a single 2 1/16" gauge) and mount your favorite pyro. This clean, stock appearing, and does the job.

#24 ·
Just goes to show that you do indeed need a pyro if you are going to be driving it hard at any time.

I was thinking the same thing. Mine is right in the exhaust manifold where Edge suggests it to be.

One of the local repair shops thats had to rebuild 6 or 7 new cummins engines all out of warranty because of mods, all with edge modules, I assume the ez module but dont know for sure. Nothing against edge in particular but none of those trucks had gauges and could have avoided the engine failures with gauges installed.

#33 ·
Sounds like this local shop is out to sell a different module. I know of many trucks with edge ez's on them. Its the box of choice for all the trailer guys around here. We have atleast 10 guys with EZ's on their 2500's and duallys at work that all pull 35 plus foot trailers. No problems. My father-in-law has had an EZ on setting 3 on his 2001 since brand new. He pulls a 35 foot fiver back and forth to Florida each fall and spring and pulls it all summer. He has 225K on his truck and the only thing he has had to do was replace the tranny at 150K. Don't believe everything people tell you.

#34 ·
I agree, this sounds like somebody's telling you a stroy-LOL Definately dont believe everything you hear! Ask for some further details, I am a dealer for all the major brands up here in Canada including Edge, MSD, Superchips,BD, Van Aken, TST, and trust me, news like this hits the dealers way before it ever reaches the public. The gauge issues aside, i have never heard of any Edge module causing engine failure without many other circumstances......

If you do get some further validated info, please let us know, but i'll bet dollars to donuts that its just a far-fetched rumor....

What kind of egts are you guys running with the 06's, from what I hear the 06 models run hotter stock to begin with. I plan on getting gauges pretty soon before I make any modifications.
One of my co-workers has an 06 with bullydog setup and the edge problems were reported by his BIL that owns the repair shop, so yes its second hand info, and there probably is more to the story than what I know, other than they were all 06 trucks with burned pistons.
His truck's egt's get too hot with the bullydog, 5" exhaust and intake system and based on other posts I've read elsewhere I still wouldnt recommend any mods without gauges if you do lots of towing.

A lot of trucks hardley pull the weight of my empty trailer!! You do not HAVE to have gauges to pull a load. Ive been pulling trailers with up to 32k loads since I was 16. Mods or not, if you pull this kind of weight with the pedal on the floor for 8-10 hours straight, you are much harder on the engine and EGT's than any kind of playing around you are going to do. Mods can and in some cases will drive egts up....but who is comparing stock pulling these kinds of loads to mods with little or no loads. Back in the day (LOL) gauges were not even available for CTD's...and EGT gauges if they were ever seen were only on Semi tractors....nobody had them in their 3/4 or 1tons. I would like to see some comparisons of what stock EGT's are prior to mods, as Im sure somebody has done this. If anybody has these numbers, please post to give us all some idea what the difference is. My last truck had the Juice/Attitude on level 5 and I could run 140kmh all day long and never break 1200*.

My next question is one I cant answer, but im sure someone here can....If you are pulling hard, lets say a long tall hill and your EGTs skyrocket into what you would consider an unsafe range, what do you do??? Let off the gas, keep going, diable the box....Im just curious what you would suggest!

Thanks All

Slow down and down shift to a lower gear to take the strain off the engine.

Lol, back in the day you couldnt just plug in an extra 100hp either. My last PSD went from 1100 tops to over 1400+ pulling a trailer after I chipped it with a 60 hp chip. Yes I know I said a bad word "PSD", didnt like it that why I have my current "tow vehicle". I tow a 33foot 5thwheel for fun so just chipping it and going isnt going to cut it since I do use my truck for towing. I believe that's what the OP wants as well.

Longhorn, that 1200 degrees was that emty, if so thats way too hot empty and would make towing out of the question if so.
