This has been discussed to death here, if you search you will find a ton of threads on it. Simple and short there is no way to do it without going to the dealer to have it disabled, which they probably won't do(safety feature). I found two easy ways to get the thing to stop honking: 1. keep light pressure on the brake pedal, 2. latch the driver's seat belt. I personally keep a little pressure on the brake pedal, it's a little tricky sometimes but with practice becomes second nature.

Here's the procedure...

1. With all doors closed and the ignition switch in any position except ON or START, buckle the driver's seat belt.

2. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position and wait for the seat belt warning light to turn off.

3. Within 60 seconds of starting the vehicle, unbuckle and then re-buckle the driver's seat belt at least three times within 10 seconds, ending with the seat belt buckled.

4. Turn off the engine. A single chime will sound to signify that you have successfully completed the programming.

i thought that was how you get rid of the chime when driving normal without your seat belt, not when your backing up with the door open?

#19 ·
I think it does both

Well on my 06. it turns off the chime so I can drive without the seatbelt and not hear the ding ding ding, However it still honks in reverse with the seat belt off and the door open.
Rats. Oh well I guess I will just disconnect the horn, As I never use it anyway. If someone pulls out in front of me and I have time to honk I have time to stop. If not Too bad... one less Prius.

mine also still honks in reverse
i tried the disable trick per manual...that didn't work....went to dealer and they said program on the truck was faulty, so they charged me $30 to fix a faulty Dodge program and the truck was still under warranty. They get you commin and they get you goin!!!!

After calling the dealer and getting ZERO help, I explained how dumb and useless this "safety feature" is and people should have the ability to disable any feature we want. Who is Chrysler to determine how we drive OUR trucks? They suggested I contact Chrysler but I do not see that being productive. So, I turned to Google and came across this thread.

This thread saved my sanity! :) Recently bought a 07 Dodge Ram 3500 5.9 Cummins and this reverse alarm deal has been driving me insane. I shorted the seatbelt switch wires and it killed two birds with one stone; the reverse alarm and the seatbelt alarm, when I just want to take the trash down the road...

No there is a way to unhook it. My wifes work did mine. She has a bunch of accident re-creation guys that she works for and they are all engineers. They figured out how to unhook it when they were using my truck for a test for a trial inspection, for the reason its on there. As soon as I can get ahold of one I will get them to write it down for me and I'll post it on here. Because I hated that damn thing.

Honestly how often do you use the horn? Unhook it and get a sweet dixie air horn and a train horn. I don't need a horn there here the turbo whistling and my straight pipes when I rev it up cause I am about to run them over for being stupid. Its called natural selection. Who am I to mess with that?
