Ok I'm brand new to the cummins world. I'm buying a cummins in the next couple weeks. Selling my srt jeep and 99 dakota R/T and want something to daily, occasional drag race and tow 5 or 6 times a year. I'm towing a vette on a flat bed so 4 or 5k lbs max.

I want a 3rd gen. I want it around 600 or 700 whp. If I were to come up on a stock 2500 what's the best money saving route to get to those levels???
Twin turbos
Fuel
What else?? Price? ?

:welcome: this is a great site will lots of smart guys that will help you out. use the search function and you can find tons of answers to almost all your questions.
a compound set up will be a good way to go for your power goals and using it as a daily driver. the he351 over an s475 is a common set up and the cheaper way to go. the he351 is the stock turbo for the 2004.5-2007. i got the crazy carl piping kit for my compound kit and it has worked great for me as well as other guys. 60hp injectors will get to 600+ HP or you can put in 100hp injectors if you want. to get upwards of 700hp you will need a healthy cp3. head studs are good to put in for insurance and depending on how high of rpms you will be running, 103# valve springs will be a good ideal. fuel filtration is really good ideal to get to help your injectors last, so a fass will get you that and a nice fuel pump. you will need tuning, so if you get a 2006-2007, get EFI live. for 2003-2005 go with HP tunes. best money saving route is to do all the work your self, as long as you are mechanically inclined. the tuning you will need a tuner to do and make sure you go with a good tuner that knows what they are doing. i recommend anarchy for EFI and i have read good things about fire punks tunes for HP, but i dont have any first hand experience with them. also get gauges and the edge insight cts is a nice monitor for that. as far as price, you gotta figure out exactly what you want then you can research everything and come up with the cost.

So the motor can handle 700 daily driven/ 1/4 /towing
Not really. The 700 HP number is really a potential max that is hit for a very short time, like on a dyno or a 1/4 mile run.

The ISB is not capable of making much than 430-450 HP in a normal duty cycle without issues. The cooling system is simply not large enough to keep water or oil temp in check and the physically size is not enough to stand the strain.

That 700 number is bragging rights and not much else. You just have to make sure in the quest for it you don't destroy the towing and DD capabilities.

A decent truck is gonna be $20k. Plus $10k of performance crap on the engine. Plus $6500 or a little more for transmission stuff. Plus other crap. Need to raise your budget at least another $10k.

Or....you buy an 06/07, get a high quality efi-live tune, throw some money in the trans, and put down 500 real useable horsepower any time you want to and your truck and engine live to run another day. Big damn difference between 500 and 700 hp! $$$$$$$

Have you ever ridden in a true 500hp truck? It's mean!

I just bought an 05 for 18k. It only has 84k miles, and is fully loaded on the inside. Only down side is that it is 4x2, but that doesnt bother me much. Around here, they don't come up very much, but if you wait youll find a great deal on exactly what you want. As for me, my all in budget for the truck is also 30k, so I have about 12k to play with in upgrades. Looking to do high 500 to low 600 hp, and daily drive.

An '06 or '07 might spool a larger turbo a tad bit easier, but the '05 would also work just fine. A small S400 single turbo will meet your 600-700 hp with no issue. Plus if money grows on trees for you, it'll work extremely well as a secondary in a massive compound turbo setup.

I believe the '06 has 4 injection events, the '04.5 and '05 has 3 I believe, and 2 for the '03-'04. I believe EFILive is only available for '06, personally, I'd look for an '06 just for that reason.

What if the truck is around 500 or 600 and u put it in 4x4 from a stop and stomp on it. Will anything break?
Ha, one of those questions where the real answer is "it depends." If you drive like an horny teenager, you can break anything. At 500 to 600 hp, you can break a lot of things. A stock transmission won't survive, you'll need a built transmission with a billet input shaft, 3 disc converter, and all the other goodies that go with it.

As for the 500-600 hp, it depends on they type of setup. You can make a truck that produces 500-600 hp, but there's a good chance that when you initially stomp on it and wait for the first few seconds, it'll be slower than a stock truck. Typically, the bigger the turbo, the slower the throttle response will become and the the low end torque will be reduced. You can run a small compound turbo setup for more low end torque, and more broken drivetrain components. If you power brake it, you can even destroy an expensive aftermarket transmission that has been properly built.

Are you looking to have this as your daily driver that can also win races? Or are you looking to make this as your toy and have something else as a DD? These things can be reliable when built right and driven with a level head. But with a lot of power, you can't expect a 7,500 lb truck to be bulletproof with 600 hp.

When I was @ 700HP I never broke anything. Still to this day, anything that has broken has broke doing something I shouldn't be trying to do. Just everyday driving and flooring it on an on-ramp or goosing it randomly I never had any issues. You just need quality parts. 700HP is easy. Just have a solid built trans and quality parts and you'll be fine. 201K miles and counting.

personally id run a 64mm ish turbo ddp 90hp injectors 35-50% over pump 5" exhaust , intercooler , mabye some water meth for the towing and of course proper tuning and built transmission since they cant handle stock power lol. would be a nice clean and cool running setup IMO
