Fog Light Install Question - Anyone Have This Happen?

So I ordered a set of OEM fog lights complete with the wiring harness that runs from light to light and the OEM switch. Got it all installed yesterday (super easy to do) and for fun I thought let me see if they'll work, even though we all know you should have to use StarScan to enable them. My truck is an SLT that came with no fogs from the factory.

So I turned them on and to my surprise, they work already. And best of all, they stay on even when the high beams are on! So no need to use StarScan or do the high beam + fogs mod with the wiring in the fuse box to keep them on. I also looked and the truck doesn't have one of those "bright box" things installed either...wouldn't make sense if it did since it never had fogs.

Anyone else ever come across this? :confused013:

I mean everything works just fine like it should, I'm just wondering why the truck is already recognizing the fogs and keeping them on with the high beams (electrically as in wiring, electrically as in computer programming, etc.) when I can find no visible signs of any mods already being done to the truck and/or its wiring

I need to get a set of fog lights and the wiring harness. Where did you order them? Are there aftermarket fogs lights that will work in the factory bumper holes?

OEM original all the way for mine (I personally wouldn't waste my money on any aftermarket fog lights). Here is a link to them:

New 2006 2009 Dodge RAM 1500 2500 3500 Fog Driving Lamps Light Kit Mopar | eBay

It's King Chrysler Jeep Dodge in Ohio that delivered the parts. There are several Dodge dealerships that have eBay pages, but I just chose them due to good feedback and they had the lowest price and free shipping. Took about 4 days to get to Alabama. Definitely a good deal compared to the price my local stealership wanted for the same thing. It includes OEM everything - new switch, the wiring harness to run from the left light over to the right light and to connect into the existing harness, the lights, hardware, and plastic shrouds. Took me about 30 min to install and aim mine. Hope that helps

Same deal with mine. Read on the forum about them needing to be enabled by the dealer. Went ahead and ordered an OEM kit from Steve White Motors. Installation was easy, decided to go ahead and try them...Wow, they worked... On high beam too!

I guess each truck is different. :confused013:

Don't waste your money on that, or any plug and play HID kit for fog lights or headlights. Our fog lights and headlights are designed to perform best with halogen bulbs in them. When you place an HID bulb in them, the aiming and focus point within the lights are all messed up. Sure, they "look brighter" but that's just your eyes playing tricks on your because of all of the glare they are now producing. not to mention you'll be blinding every oncoming car.

If you want HIDs in your headlights, fog lights, or both, then do a proper retrofit using projectors designed for HID bulbs. Easy retrofits can be done to our headlights using Morimoto Mini H1 v6.0 and Morimoto Matchbox projectors for the fog lights. Although the fog light lenses have that pattern on the plastic lens that might distort the HID projector's beam and some sort of completely clear lens might have to be fabbed up to replace the stock lens in the fog lights...but that's a whole different story.

Also, there is an upgrade that can be done to make the stock fog lights produce more light. You can get the little harness ends to run what I believe is a 9005 bulb in them instead of the normal bulb. it will give you about 500 more lumens. You have to slightly file the tabs down on the 9005 bulb base, but they work well. I personally have not done this as I think the fogs are bright enough since I was used to never having them, but might do that in the future. Look online at Geno's Garage or you might be able to piece some together at a local auto parts store for the harness ends/adapters

im very happy to hear your fogs work as expected and also jealous that they come on with your brights as i hate that mine dont but just cant justify buying the "brightbox" currently...

Same thing for me. I ordered the OEM lights, switch and harness, installed it and they worked right away, and they stay on with the brights on. Made my day for sure!

Just installed my OEM fog lights yesterday, pushed the knob and..... Nothing... Looks like I wasn't as lucky. I'll be paying my local stealership $85 to star scan it to recognize them

Don't do it. Go to the dealership and just say "Hey, I've got a question for one of the diesel mechanics and would like to speak with them in person". They should let you go back and talk to them. Then just shoot the bull for a few minutes, maybe ask about injectors or their experience with something on your ride that is prone to failure. Then bring up "Oh hey, I just installed my fog light and they need to be enabled with the StarScan tool. Would you be willing to do it during your break for $30?". 9/10 times they will say yes. This is how I scored my injector kill test and contribution test and high idle enabling for only $30. Took my diesel tech all of 5 min to do all 3, plus now I've made a new contact that I can go straight to if I have a question.

Try it out

My truck has factory fog lights on them... I ordered a replacement bulb assembly from rockauto.com... as I remember it was $34-36 ...... When I pulled down the old one.. on the back were some time clock stamps to track back the time they were made... the new one.. was exactly like the factory unit down to the location of the time clock stamps... I'm convinced it came from the same manufacturer.... and as I remember they have the switches also...

My truck (06 2500) didn't have fog lights when I purchased it used, but I was trading in another 06 (quad cab) at the time. I got the dealership to let me swap the fog lights out, and sure enough, my fog lights work perfectly, and stay on when the headlights are on high beam too! I was very glad, and swapping them out only took about 20 minutes altogether. the wiring was already there, just literally plug-n-play.

It was a very easy install, I'll have to try talking to a mechanic to see if he'll cut me a deal. I hate to pay $85 just to make them come on but if I have to oh well
